Ground-breaking ceremony for H2 filling station for buses and trucks – City Council visits Wiener Stadtwerke locations in the north of Vienna.

Peter Hanke, City Councillor for Finance, Economy and Wiener Stadtwerke, took over the ground-breaking ceremony for the company’s first hydrogen filling station for buses and trucks together with Wiener Stadtwerke General Director Martin Krajcsir in Leopoldau.

Together with The Floridsdorf district head Georg Papai, Wiener Linien Managing Director Günter Steinbauer, Vienna Energy Managing Director Michael Strebl and Wiener Netze Managing Director Gerhard Fida, Hanke and Krajcsir visited the locations of the Wiener Stadtwerke Group companies in the north of Vienna. In addition to the Leopoldau bus garage, the compressor station for the natural gas tube storage facility and the gas control station of Wiener Netze as well as a Power2Heat system for district heating from Wien Energie were on the program.

WienerStadtwerke and its group companies are the city’s central climate protection partner.

“No other company has such leverage when it comes to real improvements on the way to climate neutrality. When the hydrogen filling station goes into operation soon and the first hydrogen test bus is on the road, another important milestone for the climate future of the Vienna Metropolitan Region will be set here in Leopoldau.”

Zwtl.: Green hydrogen for the bus fleet of the future

Krajcsir, Director General.

Herein Leopoldau, it is particularly clear how far our climate-friendly plans extend and what we have planned for the coming years.

“I think that with green hydrogen for refuelling our buses, we are closing the gap to a consistently CO2-neutral drive of our public transport fleet.”

In the Leopoldau, on the northern outskirts of Vienna, the history, the present and the future of Vienna can be felt like hardly anywhere else. For over a hundred years, the development of the city there has been closely linked to The Wiener Stadtwerke.

It began with the construction of the gasworks in 1910 and extends far into the future with the hydrogen filling station for buses and trucks built by the Vienna networks. Wiener Stadtwerke is once again taking on a pioneering role and is now implementing the major renovation.

Taking hydrogen as an example: Wiener Stadtwerke is the only one in the Vienna Metropolitan Region that produces, refuels and consumes hydrogen itself. This is because its use is particularly useful in mobility where, as with large buses or trucks, a particularly large amount of energy is required.

The first hydrogen bus from Wiener Linien will make its first rounds this year. At the same time, the filling station will also be completed. Preparatory work for Wien Energie’s electrolysis plant, which will supply green hydrogen, has also already begun.
