Groundbreaking ceremony of Stadtwerke Stuttgart for the Green Hydrogen Hub at Stuttgart Harbour – 150 guests including prominent figures from politics and business Stuttgart – Construction of the first large-scale green hydrogen production plant in Stuttgart’s harbor is underway: Stadtwerke Stuttgart (SWS) kicked off the implementation of the Green Hydrogen Hub Stuttgart (GH 2 S) project with a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony on Monday (April 28).

Peter Drausnigg, Technical Managing Director of Stadtwerke Stuttgart, said:

With this hydrogen project for the Stuttgart region, we are implementing another important building block for an efficient, CO2 – free energy supply to help achieve Stuttgart’s climate goals,

At the reception at the hub’s location at Am Mittelkai 25, Baden-Württemberg’s Environment Minister Thekla Walker, Rainer Wieland, Chairman of the Stuttgart Region Association, and Dr. Frank Nopper, Lord Mayor of the state capital Stuttgart, praised the relevance of this groundbreaking hydrogen project. In their speeches to around 150 invited guests, they highlighted the project’s major significance for the economy of the entire region and beyond.

The overall project consists of three components: generation and logistics with the Green Hydrogen Hub Stuttgart (GH 2 S), distribution via the H2 GeNeSiS pipeline, and applications with HydroPulse Stuttgart (HyPulseST). The project’s investment volume in the current expansion phase amounts to approximately 50 million euros, of which approximately 16.6 million euros are financed through subsidies. The Stuttgart Region Association is funding the Green Hydrogen Hub and HyPulseST sub-projects with approximately 10 million euros. The construction of the H2 GeNeSiS pipeline is supported by the European Union with approximately 4.9 million euros and the state of Baden-Württemberg with approximately 1.7 million euros.Emphasizes Peter Drausnigg.

The hydrogen project is scheduled to be completed and operational by December 2026,

The hydrogen project marks the beginning of a new chapter in energy supply for the municipal utilities. Special thanks go to our partners for their financial support and assistance,

Green hydrogen can be used in many different ways

SWS is beginning construction of the generation plant and logistics components at the Port of Stuttgart. Excess wind and solar power will be used to produce ultrapure green hydrogen. It will primarily serve industry, particularly in vehicle development, as a fuel for fuel cell buses, trucks, and ships.

Mayor Dr. Frank Nopper, says:

Stuttgart’s municipal utilities are transforming the Port of Stuttgart into a center of technological change.

“With the Green Hydrogen Hub, Stuttgart will become a showcase location for green hydrogen. The Port of Stuttgart will become a hub for production and logistics in this innovative technology, including a hydrogen pipeline in the Neckar Valley from Stuttgart-Gaisburg to Esslingen,”

“The use of green hydrogen for the mobility, industry, and energy supply sectors will strengthen Stuttgart as a business location and make it more competitive. This is also an important building block on the path to climate neutrality. The future potential annual production of 1,200 tons of green hydrogen at the Port of Stuttgart is equivalent to four million liters of diesel and represents an annual savings of 15,000 tons of CO2 . “

Three electrolyzers will go into operation at the hub at the Port of Stuttgart starting in late 2026 and will produce up to 1,000 tons of ultra-pure hydrogen annually from green electricity. The green hydrogen will be transported to customers via trailers or the underground H2 GeNeSiS pipeline. The pipeline is planned to run from Stuttgart-East via Stuttgart-Hedelfingen and the hub to the Esslingen municipal boundary. Hydrogen filling stations, among other things, will be connected to it. This project marks another milestone for an efficient, CO2 – free energy supply with potential beyond Baden-Württemberg.

Baden-Württemberg’s Environment Minister Thekla Walker, says:

Hydrogen plays a key role in the energy transition,

It represents both climate protection and a secure energy supply. “As a leading industrial location, Baden-Württemberg must be involved in this technology from the very beginning.

The Green Hydrogen Hub makes a strong statement:

We are helping to shape the transformation and keeping the region competitive.

This is a model and a significant step for the ramp-up of the hydrogen economy in Baden-Württemberg.”

Rainer Wieland, Chairman of the Stuttgart Region Association, said:

With our hydrogen strategy, we as a region are contributing to the transformation of the economy and the location, improving the attractiveness of the location and attracting skilled workers locally,

“Projects like this are intended to test the economic implementation in reality, prepare the market, and improve social acceptance of hydrogen as an energy source among the population. Only if hydrogen is available can we succeed in establishing it as a genuine alternative.”

Milestone on the way to a green future

The hydrogen project is considered a further milestone on the path to the state capital’s green future: It entails economically viable hydrogen production, including transport infrastructure, in the Neckar Valley. The starting point for the SWS project GH 2 S is the H2 GeNeSiS joint project, funded by the EU and the Ministry of the Environment and Climate of the State of Baden-Württemberg. In addition to SWS, the Stuttgart Region Economic Development Agency (WRS), the Esslingen am Neckar Municipal Utilities GmbH & Co. KG, the Steinbeis Innovation Center for Energy-Efficient and Emission-Free Technologies (SIEET), and the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research BW (ZSW) are also working on this project.
