Groups Sign Development Agreement for Malaysia Hydrogen Hub
A consortium of developers and state-run agencies announced plans for a 10-GW green hydrogen hub in the Malaysian state of Sabah, on the northern tip of Borneo. Property developer LBS Bina Group on Nov. 14 said it has a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with several groups for the facility. LBS is set to lead the project, with support from government-backed investment promoter Invest Sabah Berhad, state environmental agency Sabah Forestry Development Authority (Safoda), and lighting supplier Midwest Green Sdn Bhd. LBS in a statement said a key aspect of the collaboration will be its focus on aligning with both national and state sustainability goals. LBS said it plans to develop a site from 15,000 acres to 30,000 acres in size in the district of Kota Marudu. There are plans for an electrolyzer facility that would be capable of producing 250,000 tonnes of hydrogen annually. An industrial park also is being considered within the site.
‘Renewable Energy Potential’
Tan Sri Lim Hock San, LBS Group executive chairman, said,
With the immense renewable energy potential of Kota Marudu, we see this as a landmark project that will drive economic growth for Sabah and create lasting job opportunities for local communities.
LBS in a statement said the companies will work together on land surveys and site inspections to identify the best locations for the hub. The MOU’s framework calls for development and construction of a green hydrogen production facility powered by solar and wind energy, along with an industrial park powered by renewable energy.
The statement said,
This MOU is thus viewed as the opening of opportunities for collaborations with various local and international partners in the near future, marking a groundbreaking step towards developing Sabah as a major player within the renewable energy sector.
Region With High Solar Irradiance, Wind Speeds
The Kota Marudu region has some of the highest solar irradiance levels in Malaysia. The area also has consistent high wind speeds. Officials said the site’s proximity to shipping ports will support export logistics, another reason to consider it as a regional green energy hub.
Hock San, said :
This MOU underscores our commitment to sustainable development and Malaysia’s green energy agenda,
Hock San continued,
We are honored to work with our esteemed partners like Invest Sabah, Safoda and Midwest Green to drive sustainable growth and innovation.
“LBS, in partnership with Midwest Green, will collaborate with Invest Sabah and Safoda to conduct land surveys and site inspections, facilitating the identification of optimal sites. The parties will also work together to establish a consortium structure, ensuring alignment with local and international stakeholders interested in this forward-looking venture” —Darrell Proctor is a senior editor for POWER
