[Pulse] South Korea’s second-largest oil refiner GS Caltex Corp. has partnered with state utility Korea Gas Corp. (KOGAS) to produce and supply liquid hydrogen in the country, joining the active matchmaking in hydrogen economy encouraged under state green initiative.

They signed a memorandum of understanding to launch liquid hydrogen production and supply business under strategic partnership at an event held Friday in Seoul.

GS Caltex and KOGAS will focus their partnership to create the liquid hydrogen value chain from building of a liquid hydrogen plant and charging stations to installation of reforming facilities and commercialization of carbon capturing technologies.

The liquid hydrogen plant will be built on an idled land of the LNG regasification and storage plant of KOGAS by 2024 with a production capacity of an average 10,000 tons per year, equivalent to the amount of powering 80,000 units of hydrogen-fueled passenger vehicles.

The hydrogen extraction process is eco-friendly way of producing hydrogen and also helps reduce costs, the company explained.

Hydrogen produced from the plant will be supplied to Seoul, nearby metropolitan areas and central regions.

The two companies will work together for distribution and supply of liquid hydrogen. Tens of liquid hydrogen charging stations will be added to metropolitan areas and central regions, timed with the operation of the liquid hydrogen plant.

Installation of hydrogen separation facilities, test and commercialization of the carbon capture and utilization technology also are among cooperation projects.

GS Caltex has added hydrogen charging facilities to its existing filling station in Gangdong-gu, Seoul in May last year. It runs an all-in-one pump station for traditional and green fuels – gasoline, diesel, LPG and electricity.
