GSFA Convenes Hydrogen Energy Experts from 15 Countries: P2X2P Policy Framework Critical to Net-Zero AI and Semiconductor Industries
The Global Sustainable Fuel Alliance (GSFA) recently brought together hydrogen and energy experts from 15 European and Asian countries, convened in Brussels during the European Sustainable Energy Week, to address a critical question: How can AI and semiconductor industries secure 24/7 carbon-free energy while meeting RE100 and SBTi commitments?
The experts also noted that future policy discussions should address how renewable attributes embedded in green fuels can be transparently traced and recognised across borders, secure 24/7 carbon-free energy while meeting RE100, SBTi and long-term energy security objectives.
The consensus was clearAs the demand from AI data centres and semiconductor manufacturing continues to grow, Power-to-X-to-Power (P2X2P) offers a practical solution by converting renewable electricity into green fuels such as e-methanol, enabling energy to be stored, transported across borders, and converted back into electricity when needed.
P2X2P – Enabling Virtual Grid Interconnection via Green Fuels as Energy Carriers
By transforming renewable electricity into tradable green fuels, P2X2P connects renewable energy supply in one region with industrial power demand in another, overcoming geographical, grid and land constraints.
The experts highlighted the needs for international policy frameworks that support:
• Cross-border recognition of renewable electricity and green fuel certificates
• End-to-end renewable energy traceability
• Alignment with RE100 and SBTi requirements
This is already becoming a reality, with Taiwan’s semiconductor industry beginning to source clean electricity generated from green fuels.
GSFA has also successfully facilitated collaboration between its members and major industrial off-takers, helping advance one of the first semiconductor-focused hydrogen energy projects from planning into implementation. This demonstrates that hydrogen-based energy solutions are moving beyond policy discussions and into real-world deployment.
