H2 Mobility to close 22 hydrogen stations as it shifts focus to trucks

H2 MOBILITY plans to close 22 hydrogen stations in Germany by mid-2025 as it continues to shift its attention to commercial vehicles. The closures will take place in two phases, half this quarter and the other in the middle of 2025. The move is part of the company’s ongoing network consolidation, which began in 2022.

The German HRS operator, which is marking its 10th anniversary this year, stated the decision reflects evolving market dynamics. The company is prioritizing infrastructure tailored to light and heavy commercial vehicles. Many of the older stations slated for closure were originally designed for passenger cars and are no longer aligned with current technical and economic requirements.

Martin Jüngel, Managing Director & CFO of H2 MOBILITY, said:

The hydrogen mobility market in Germany has changed significantly over the past decade.

“Our strategic focus has been on expanding hydrogen infrastructure where demand is highest, particularly for commercial transport. Some of the older stations, built more than a decade ago, no longer meet today’s operational needs,”

The transition to commercial fleets presents specific technical requirements, including larger fueling stations, higher canopy clearances for trucks, and increased hydrogen storage capacity.

To support this transition, H2 MOBILITY is investing in new-generation HRS focused on regional hubs with high commercial demand. Two new refueling locations, featuring 350, 500, and 700 bar capacity, are set to open in Düsseldorf and Ludwigshafen within the next six months.

Jüngel added:

By concentrating demand in key areas, we are developing an infrastructure that is both economically sustainable and supports the transition in transport,

The company’s restructuring reflects broader trends in hydrogen mobility, where commercial and heavy-duty applications are increasingly driving investment and infrastructure development.
