Hamburg – electrolyser for hydrogen production taking shape.
The Hamburger Energiewerke (HEnW) and the Hamburg-based energy consultant Luxcara have formed a consortium to turn the decommissioned Moorburg coal-fired power plant into the “Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub” (HGHH), press release said Thursday (June 13, 2024). Construction of the electrolyser is due to begin in 2025.
Target of 800 million watts
Jens Kerstan, Senator for the Environment, said:
Moorburg is ideal for developing a hydrogen economic sector because of its location and connection to pipelines and transport routes.
The HGHH consortium is preparing to build a 100-million-watt (MW) electrolyser and to increase the electrolysis capacity to 800 MW. The project is being subsidised with around EUR 154 million in German government funds of which Hamburg is paying EUR 46.2 million. The electrolyser will ensure that the plant in Moorburg can produce its own green hydrogen, said Kerstan.
Hydrogen key to energy transition
The HGHH is key to Hamburg’s hydrogen strategy which includes both imports and local production. The plant in Moorburg shows that the conversion of a single coal-fired power plant can drive the decarbonisation of an entire industrial site .
