The metallurgical industry in the EU accounts for 70 million tonnes direct CO2 emissions annually (2017). Mitigating the CO2 footprint from the production is essential to ensure further licence to operate in Europe.
Moreover, the industry is highly dependent on imports. Less than 15% of metal input to the European process industry is supplied from domestic extraction.
Additionally, only 31% of the coking coal is sourced in Europe. The latter has been identified as a critical raw material.
The HARARE project address these two issues. Substituting carbon with hydrogen is one of the few ways metal production can become CO2-emissions free.
Also utilizing raw materials more efficiently, will simultaneously reduce Europe’s dependence on Critical raw materials.
