HD Construction Equipment Unveils World’s Largest 22-liter Hydrogen Engine

HD Construction Equipment, which is set to launch in January next year, will unveil its 22-liter large-scale hydrogen engine for the first time at Korea’s largest hydrogen industry exhibition.

The company announced on Dec. 3 that it will participate in the World Hydrogen Expo 2025 (WHE 2025) to be held at KINTEX in Ilsan from Dec. 4-7. WHE 2025 is Korea’s representative hydrogen industry event, and from this year, the Hydrogen International Conference and the industrial exhibition H2 MEET have been integrated, expanding its scale. The exhibition will feature 250 companies from 20 countries including major Korean companies and overseas participants from the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdom, with approximately 30 thousand visitors expected.

HD Construction Equipment will showcase its hydrogen engine technology portfolio covering both mobility and power generation sectors at this exhibition. The company plans to jointly exhibit the 11-liter hydrogen engine HX12 for vehicles and power generation and the 22-liter large-scale hydrogen engine HX22 for power generation, unveiling major development achievements.

In particular, the 22-liter hydrogen engine is the world’s largest, featuring a V-type 12-cylinder structure with maximum output of 600 kilowatts (kW·816 horsepower) and continuous output of 477kW (649 horsepower). This level can meet the annual electricity demand of approximately 200 households. HX22 successfully completed its first ignition ceremony at the Gunsan plant last month, entering the demonstration phase for carbon-free large-scale hydrogen engines in earnest.

HX12 has had its performance and durability verified through over 1,500 hours of hydrogen engine generator demonstration operation and mounting tests on large cargo trucks and excavators. HX12 aims for mass production by the end of next year. The company is also pursuing commercialization of hydrogen engine trucks in 2027, hydrogen engine generators in 2029, and hydrogen engine excavators in 2030.

HD Construction Equipment, which will launch in January next year through the merger of HD Hyundai Infracore and HD Hyundai Construction Equipment, plans to continuously develop and strengthen technologies including carbon-free power generation solutions based on hydrogen engines, hydrogen powertrains for large commercial vehicles and construction equipment, and direct injection hydrogen engines.
