HHLA receives additional funding toward the TransHyDE hydrogen project.
[Container Mag] Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) has received an additional €2.3m (US$2.7m) from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) to test new transportation technologies for green hydrogen. The BMBF will fund three key hydrogen projects as part of the implementation of the National Hydrogen Strategy to facilitate Germany’s transition to a hydrogen economy over a period of four years.
The three projects are the serial manufacture of large-scale water electrolysers (H2Giga), the offshore production of hydrogen and secondary products (H2Mare) and technologies for the transportation of hydrogen (TransHyDE).
Dr. Georg Böttner, who is responsible for HHLA’s hydrogen project, said:
An important question in the development of hydrogen technology is the widespread availability of this energy source.
“HHLA, too, is searching for the best answers to this question, which is why we are involved in the key TransHyDE project.”
HHLA is one of more than 240 partners from the scientific and industrial sectors working together on the key hydrogen projects.
Hydrogen is rarely used at the same location where it is manufactured and TransHyDE aims to tackle this problem through the development of a holistic approach to the production, transportation and use of hydrogen.
Together with other partners, HHLA is examining the various transport options and is involved in the TransHyDE projects Mukran and Helgoland on the islands of Rügen and Heligoland, respectively.
The transportation of hydrogen in high-pressure containers as well as via liquid organic hydrogen containers (LOHCs) is being tested at these locations.
HHLA intends to become climate-neutral by 2040 as part of its sustainability strategy and the use of hydrogen as an energy source can make a key contribution to the company’s decarbonisation.
The company’s focus is on implementing fuel cells in handling equipment and heavy-load road vehicles.
Hydrogen is seen as an attractive option due to its ability to be transported over long distances in various forms while being used as an energy storage system.
It is expected to relieve and stabilise power grids because it can store energy for material use, transport it, and release it any time or anywhere.
HHLA is convinced that hydrogen is a promising sector and, as per its strategy, it aims to establish profitable growth areas along the transport flows of the future.
Thanks to its network of ports and connections that extend into the European hinterland, HHLA is “very well positioned” to take advantage of the new opportunities in hydrogen import and transportation.
