Historic moment: EDP produces the first green hydrogen molecule in Ceará.

Information was confirmed by the company in an official statement.

The first molecule of green hydrogen in Ceará was produced last Thursday. The achievement is part of EDP Brasil’s operations in São Gonçalo do Amarante, Ceará, integrating the Pecém Thermoelectric Complex (UTE Pecém).

EDP’s green hydrogen plant (Pecém H2V) is a research and development project of UTE Pecém, which will be officially launched in January 2023. In all, R$ 42 million were invested, and the unit is the first in the state.

João Marques da Cruz, CEO of EDP Brasil, said:

We elect the Pecém complex to house our first green hydrogen plant in Brazil because we recognize that Ceará brings together strategic characteristics to lead the process of introducing green hydrogen in the country, either for its exceptional solar and wind potential – fundamental for gas production – or for its location and excellent infrastructure offer for the disposal of this product to the international market.

KNOWLEDGE GENERATION

For EDP, the project helps to insert the company in the field of generating knowledge about this new market, which is still going through the process of developing the production chain.

“Even more important than the production of the first molecule is the experience that this initiative will bring to EDP. With the knowledge acquired, we can contribute more assertively to expand the production of green hydrogen in the country and also to regulate the segment”, said the CEO of EDP Brazil.
