Hydrogen bus – Bus company to launch investigation following fire in Crawley

The managing director of a bus company has said they will be launching an investigation after a bus fire.

Firefighters were called this afternoon to the fire on Southgate Avenue, close to the County Mall shopping centre.

The road was closed as crews battled to get the fire under control.

The bus was one of Metrobus’ zero emission buses, powered by hydrogen.

Photos show that the bus was completely gutted by the blaze.

Ed Wills, managing director of Metrobus said:

Earlier today, there was a fire on a bus. We can confirm that no one was injured.

“The driver acted with exceptional professionalism, ensuring all passengers were safely evacuated. We have had no such previous incidents with hydrogen buses, and have launched a full investigation into the cause of the fire alongside our partners at Wrightbus.”

A fleet of 43 hydrogen powered buses launched across parts of Sussex, Surrey and Kent last year following a successful bid between Metrobus, West Sussex County Council, Surrey County Council, Kent County Council and London Gatwick for £10 million of government funding.

The only emission from a hydrogen fuel cell is water vapor, which helps improve air quality and reduces the impact of harmful emissions from traditional diesel buses.
