The ‘Hydrogen Route’ of Carburos Metálicos reaches its eighth stop in Toledo to refuel an urban bus.

Carburos Metálicos, a leading company in the industrial and medical gases sector in Spain that is part of the Air Products Group, has successfully concluded its participation in the circulation and refueling test of a hydrogen (H2) bus carried out in the city of Toledo for a week.

The local council has made public its intention to integrate this zero-emission technology into its intercity public transport network in the future in order to move towards its extensive implementation.

Air Products has provided a portable hydrogen generator, as well as the renewable H2 used in this real use test.

The vehicle, manufactured by CaetanoBus, has traveled more than 600 km on routes expressly designed to test its autonomy, with and without passengers and also using heating and without it, with ambient temperatures between 11 and 15°C. . In the most demanding conditions, the autonomy of the unit was always above 400 km.

The test, promoted by the company from Toledo Inael Electrical Systems through its new strategic division LP Hydrogen, has been carried out in coordination with technicians from Unauto, the concessionaire company for urban buses in the city of Toledo, and is part of the project Toledo Sustainable Mobility Hub.

This initiative has a grant from the ‘Misiones CDTI’ program to develop the storage module (Gas to Power) within the PhotoHy consortium led by Inael.

Carburos Metálicos has once again made clear the maturity of this technology and its ability to contribute to decarbonising urban transport, both for people and goods, within the framework of the environmental and energy transition objectives faced by large Spanish cities.

Another aspect that has been revealed during this test is that refueling with H2 is just as simple and fast as with any other fuel, which facilitates intensive use.

The renewable H2 supplied by Carburos Metálicos to carry out this pilot test comes from a production plant associated with a Guarantee of Origin (GdO) program that allows certification of the renewable origin of the electricity used to obtain said H2.

Hydrogen route
The company, which this year celebrates its 125th anniversary with an eye on the energy transition, is currently leading the development of the new mobility with H2 in Spain, since it has the necessary capacities to produce it, distribute it and take it to the deposit of the vehicles by means of their own hydrogenerators.

To prove it, it carries out real use tests through its ‘Hydrogen Route’, which in 2021 already visited Oviedo, Bilbao, Tarragona, Valladolid, Zaragoza and Córdoba, cities to which A Coruña and Toledo must be added this year.

The supply to the first urban bus line that operates permanently in Spain powered by renewable H2, inaugurated in Torrejón de Ardoz (Madrid) on January 26, also has the technology developed by Carburos Metálicos. Likewise, the company announced a few days ago the opening of the first public hydrogen plant in Tarragona throughout 2023.

On the other hand, Carburos Metálicos is a member of different associations that promote the H2 economy and actively participates in the ‘hydrogen tables’ of several autonomous communities created to promote projects within the framework of the ‘Hydrogen roadmap’ established by the Central government.

Similarly, he is patron of the Hydrogen Studies Chair created by the Comillas Pontifical University to study the role of this energy vector in the transition to a decarbonised economy.

The company is part of the world’s largest producer of H2, the Air Products Group, which has participated in more than 250 H2 service station projects in twenty countries since 1993.

It also has the world’s largest channeled H2 distribution network and a broad portfolio of patents related to its refueling, so it is present throughout its value chain. Air Products refueling technologies provide more than 1.5 million H2 refills per year.

Miquel Lope, General Director of Carburos Metálicos, said:

This successful test of a renewable hydrogen bus in the city of Toledo, known for the great unevenness of its streets, demonstrates once again that it is a mature technology and ready to contribute to decarbonizing heavy transport in any city.

“Carburos Metálicos will continue promoting its development as one of its main strategic lines”.
