Hydrogen – Five French regions are mobilizing for HY-FEN

Tuesday, July 1st – Joint declaration on the occasion of the Hydrogen Days in the Territories 2025, at the Lyon Regional Hotel.

During the 2025 Hydrogen in the Territories Days, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, Grand Est, Occitanie, and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur regions affirmed their support for the project, alongside NaTran. HY-FEN constitutes the hydrogen transport infrastructure that will irrigate France from south to north, a project that is part of the energy transition of the territories.

On July 1st , the 5 regions crossed by HY-FEN affirmed their shared commitment to the emergence of this structuring project, an essential lever for the energy transition in the regions and the decarbonization of industry. Alongside NaTran, a joint declaration was signed this Tuesday, July 1st at the Lyon Regional Hotel in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, by the regions crossed by the route, in the presence of Fabrice Pannekoucke, President of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, Agnès Rossi, Regional Councilor of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, François Werner, Deputy Vice-President for the Energy and Ecological Transition for the Grand Est region and Pierre Duvieusart, deputy and representative of Sandrine Meunier, Managing Director of NaTran.

NaTran, declared :

Hydrogen is an essential vector of the future French energy mix and its development will gradually emerge in the various industrial basins.

The result of our extensive discussions with local authorities, producers and potential consumers, the HY-FEN infrastructure aims to promote the decarbonization and competitiveness of our industry while contributing to regional planning. We thank the Regions concerned by this project, which, through this joint declaration, express their support and commitment alongside us in the realization of this future project,”

More than 800 km long, the HY-FEN hydrogen transport infrastructure project (see map below) links Bouches-du-Rhône to Moselle, crossing 5 French regions.

This strategic infrastructure will connect regional industrial basins to renewable, low-carbon hydrogen production and storage sites, thereby promoting the decarbonization of the local economy. A true regional planning tool, HY-FEN will contribute to economic development, industrial attractiveness, and national energy sovereignty. It will also contribute to achieving the decarbonization objectives set at the national and European levels.

Recognized as a project of common interest by the European Union, it benefits from a subsidy from Brussels of 15 million euros, allowing the co-financing of the initial studies.
