Hydrogen forces unite as two leading groups join to speed the development of sustainable energy.

Representatives from the Western Gateway Partnership’s Hydrogen Ecosystem met with members of the Hydrogen South West board to push forward the development of a hydrogen economy in the region. This collaboration is part of a Western Gateway tour of the great work to develop clean energy across South Wales and Western England.

The Western Gateway Hydrogen Ecosystem brochure and map were launched last month as a collaboration between the Western Gateway Partnership, which represents the economic powerhouse of South Wales and Western England, and the GW4 Alliance, which brings together the universities of Bath, Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter.

The newly launched Hydrogen Ecosystem aims to increase collaboration and drive investment in the area’s clean energy industry to turbocharge the development and use of hydrogen.

Members of the Western Gateway’s Hydrogen Steering Committee met with Hydrogen South West, a consortium of Airbus, Bristol Port Company, Bristol Airport, Costain, EDF, EasyJet, GKN Aerospace, Wales and West Utilities, and Wood, which is working together to speed the development of hydrogen in the South West.

Both groups joined for a tour of the newly opened Institute for Advanced Automotive Propulsion Systems (IAAPS) facility in Emersons Green. IAAPS offers a leading example of the rapidly evolving hydrogen sector in the Western Gateway area.

During the tour, the group saw work to develop future generations of clean and efficient propulsion systems and early development of a green hydrogen manufacturing and testing facility.

Paul Moorby, Chair of the Hydrogen Ecosystem Steering Group and Western Gateway board member said:

It’s been great to see the amazing facilities at IAAPS taking shape and hear about Hydrogen South West’s impressive plans to speed the change to hydrogen energy.

“The Western Gateway Hydrogen Ecosystem is working to boost investment and collaboration. Together, we will support the fantastic work that is already taking place across South Wales and Western England.”

“Our steering committee is getting out and about over the coming months, to see first-hand the projects going on across the region. We look forward to meeting with you soon.”

Simon Earles, Chair of Hydrogen South West said:

Hydrogen South West was established to connect people, projects and places, and enable the development of hydrogen infrastructure across the South West.

“By combining industrial experience, delivery expertise and regional knowledge, we can generate investment and bring the benefits of hydrogen to the region.”

Professor Gary Hawley, Executive Director of IAAPS said:

The experimental work in our new state-of-the-art experimental facility is much broader than the automotive sector from where we have originated.

“Our work on propulsion systems and the transition to net zero has received a major boost in so much that we will be manufacturing green hydrogen onsite in the early part of 2023 and using it in our research on prototype propulsion systems.”
