Hydrogen – Full load of the future: E.ON presents the first eTruckathon together with IAA TRANSPORTATION

Twelve e-trucks, twelve teams, 300 kilometers under power: In cooperation with the IAA TRANSPORTATION, E.ON organized the first eTruckathon today. The practical suitability of electric and fuel cell trucks and the associated charging and hydrogen infrastructure was demonstrated on a route from Essen to Hanover. For the first time, E.ON brought together leading vehicle manufacturers and logistics companies with its own e-mobility experts for a joint long-distance test.

The participants in the first eTruckathon include teams from renowned companies such as Daimler Truck, DB Schenker, DHL, Elflein Transport & Logistik, FAUN, Fiege, Gruber Logistics, Hyundai, Hylane, MAN, Renault, L. Stroetmann and Trailer Dynamics. In the run-up to the IAA TRANSPORTATION, the teams set off on a joint electric demonstration drive. The starting point was the E.ON Drive TestingLab in Essen, where E.ON develops and tests charging solutions for electromobility. The approximately 300-kilometer route led over freeways and country roads and represented a practical test. Although the range of the trucks was sufficient for the entire route, charging stops were planned to demonstrate the suitability of charging for everyday use. The destination was the IAA exhibition grounds in Hanover.

Marc Spieker, Chief Operating Officer at E.ON, explains:

With the eTruckathon, we are bringing together the leading players in the industry and providing a practical insight into the current possibilities of environmentally friendly heavy goods transport.

“In many areas, electric and hydrogen trucks are already suitable for everyday use. The technologies are available. In the coming years, it will be a matter of bringing them into widespread and affordable use. On the industry side, we are not waiting for this future, we are simply implementing it.”

Jürgen Mindel, Managing Director of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), emphasizes:

E.ON’s initiative fits perfectly into the concept of the IAA TRANSPORTATION.

“The eTruckathon provides a clear and practical demonstration of how the transformation to sustainable mobility in freight transport can be successfully implemented. Together we are actively shaping the future.”

In order to make the experiences and findings from the first eTruckathon accessible to a broad public, E.ON is presenting the results together with the participating companies at the IAA TRANSPORTATION. E.ON will have its own booth there from September 16 to 22. The eTruckathon teams will be available to answer questions about the event and the latest developments in electric heavy goods transportation. At the IAA TRANSPORTATION, E.ON will also be presenting integrated solutions that make it easier for companies to switch to electromobility and enable a smooth transition to sustainable transportation.
