Hydrogen-powered Toyota HiLux dual-cab concept unveiled in Thailand – Drive.
Toyota has unveiled its latest vision of a zero-emission HiLux, with a new dual-cab concept powered by hydrogen fuel cells.
A dual-cab, hydrogen-powered Toyota HiLux concept has been unveiled in Thailand, as a series of extra-cab prototype are built for a limited trial in the UK.
As reported by Thai website Headlight Mag, the dual-cab concept borrows components from its UK equivalent – and hydrogen fuel-cell parts from the Mirai sedan.
It is unclear if it will go into mass production, but reports suggest limited numbers may be built for trials in Thailand – in addition to the UK examples.
It is based on the 2024 facelift for the diesel HiLux range, but adds a body-coloured grille, ‘FCEV’ decals, and blue highlights on its alloy wheels and mirror caps.
Inside, the HiLux hydrogen dual-cab concept is very similar to the standard ute, aside from ‘FCEV’ lettering across the dash and the gear selector – which looks to be shared with the Mirai hydrogen sedan.
The shifter also includes an automatic electric handbrake, something not available in Toyota’s current HiLux range.
Slides reportedly taken from a Toyota presentation show the Japanese car maker will be targeting long-range logistics within the commercial sector with limited numbers of the HiLux FCEV concept.
Another shows the FCEV’s towing rating of 1500kg, which is significantly lower than the current rating of the diesel HiLux 2.8-litre automatic at 3500kg.
Beneath the body, the HiLux FCEV concept shares fuel-cell powertrain technology with the Mirai sedan, according to Headlight Mag.
Three hydrogen cylinders with a capacity of seven litres power the ute, giving it a claimed driving range of up to 600km.
Under the bonnet sits the hydrogen fuel-cell stack converting hydrogen into electricity, which is then sent to the electric motor mounted on the rear axle.
Despite sharing technology with the Mirai, it is not known if the dual-cab ute has the same 134kW/300Nm outputs.
