Hydrogen – Shell – Hollandse Kust Noord offshore wind farm produces first green electricity.

Hollandse Kust Noord, the newest Dutch offshore wind farm, delivered its first green electricity on 19 June 2023. In coming months, the production capacity of the offshore wind farm, developed by CrossWind (a joint venture of Shell and Eneco) will be further expanded. Hollandse Kust Noord will eventually supply the equivalent of 2.8% of the Dutch electricity demand and make a significant contribution to the energy transition in the Netherlands.

Tjalling de Bruin, CEO and Project Director at CrossWind, said:

We are delighted to announce the production of first power from Hollandse Kust Noord.

“To have the wind turbines generating green electricity safely and successfully in such a short timeframe, is a great achievement for everyone involved.”

Hollandse Kust Noord is located about 18.5 kilometers off the coast of Egmond aan Zee. The first monopiles were installed in October 2022, and the first turbines in April this year. A total of 69 wind turbines will be built. CrossWind’s partners Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy and Van Oord use the offshore installation vessels such as Scylla to transport and install the turbines.

The vessel can carry the parts of three wind turbines on board at a time and hoist them into place. Dimensions are very large, with for example each composite turbine blade measuring 97 metres, longer than the wingspan of the world’s largest passenger aircraft.

Once operational, a single rotation of a blade takes about six seconds. Providing enough energy to power a Dutch home for a day. The electricity is brought ashore via the with European transmission system operator TenneT’s offshore grid connection. CrossWind’s power reaches customers via a high-voltage substation along the A9 highway near Beverwijk.

Hollandse Kust Noord is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2023. From 2025, smart innovations will also be added, including energy storage in hydrogen and floating solar panels. The knowledge gained from the smart innovations is shared, in order to accelerate the entire energy transition of the Netherlands.
