Two Hydrogen Stations Added in One Go – Shell

Two hydrogen stations added in one go.

The Netherlands has gained two additional hydrogen filling stations. From now on, drivers of a hydrogen vehicle can also go to Green Planet in Pesse (Drenthe) as well as Shell Westpoort in Amsterdam to fill up. Several partners are rapidly expanding the network to around twenty hydrogen stations.

Jeanine Bakx, General Manager Mobility Benelux & France for Shell is very happy with the expansion of the network:

But we are not there yet.

“To be able to comfortably drive their hydrogen cars, our customers need even more filling stations. We are working on this, together with our partners in the H2Benelux consortium and other colleagues in the sector. Shell has now opened built three hydrogen stations in the Netherlands, but we would like to realize more.”

A hydrogen car is in fact also an electric car. A hydrogen vehicle can fill up in the same amount of time as a normal refueling stop (3 to 5 min) and then drive about 500 to 600 kilometers. Thanks for staying up to date with Hydrogen Central. The vehicle is equipped with a so-called fuel cell that converts the hydrogen gas into electricity that, in turn, is used to power the electric engine. The only emissions from the car are small water droplets.

Together with partners, Shell wants to promote hydrogen driving. Jeanine Bakx: “We still have the well-known chicken-and-egg conundrum. On the one hand, there are still few consumers with a hydrogen car, because they still have limited possibilities to refuel with hydrogen.”

“On the other hand, there is little enthusiasm to invest in hydrogen stations when there are few hydrogen vehicles on the road. Shell wants to break through this dilemma.”

About H2Benelux

H2Benelux is a consortium consisting of Colruyt Group, Total Energies, Shell, Rijkswaterstaat and WaterstofNet. The consortium aims to build eight hydrogen filling stations in the Benelux to stimulate hydrogen-powered transport. In addition, it aims to test 80 hydrogen vehicles in daily use.

H2Benelux is co-financed by Connecting Europe Facility of the European Commission and has DKTi co-financing from RVO. The hydrogen filling stations at Shell Westpoort and Den Ruygenhoek were realised within the framework of H2Benelux.
