First Hydrogen Suction Dredger in Rotterdam

First hydrogen suction dredger in Rotterdam.

This week, the municipality of Rotterdam is testing the very first hydrogen swirl dredger in the world. Subsequently, the sewer service takes the special truck into use to clean the wells (swirls) and sewerage in the city.

The fact that Rotterdam is now investing in this hydrogen truck fits in with the ambition of the municipality: by 2030, all vehicles must be ‘clean’ and no longer run on fossil fuels. That already applies to nearly 400 electric vehicles. The new swirl piston is the first vehicle in the municipal fleet that works on hydrogen.

Arno Bonte, alderman

Swirl suction dredgers consume a lot of energy and a lot of fuel.

“That fuel is now completely clean. The hydrogen vent piston does not produce CO2 and keeps the air in the city healthy.”

Clean

Rotterdam is the first user of a swirl dredger in the world that works on hydrogen. The motor is electric. The electric motor is supplied with electricity by hydrogen. Thanks to a larger capacity than that of batteries, the truck can thus work longer and drive more kilometers than a fully electric truck. The only emissions that the car produces is water, so no more dirty exhaust gases.

A wonderful first, says sustainability alderman Arno Bonte. ‘Swirl suction dredgers consume a lot of energy and therefore also a lot of fuel. That fuel is now completely clean. The hydrogen fuel piston does not produce CO2 and keeps the air in the city healthy. In this way we contribute to our climate goals and to making the city more attractive.’

Refueling hydrogen

This first sustainable truck was built by Hyzon. That company specializes in the development of heavy hydrogen vehicles. For the refuelling of hydrogen, the swirl dredger has to go to Rhoon, where the only hydrogen filling station in the Rijnmond region is located. Rotterdam will soon have more hydrogen stations.
