HYmpulsion – Hydrogen, a solution for decarbonizing heavy and intensive transport in the Alps

What if hydrogen were one of the solutions for decarbonizing intensive transport in mountainous regions? While battery technology has taken the lead in urban centers, hydrogen is gaining ground in vehicles used for more intensive purposes. This is even more true in the mountains, where electric batteries suffer from the cold, the steep inclines, and the significant loss of range.

Fueling infrastructure to support the mobility of tomorrow

Better suited to cold climates, hydrogen is the solution of the future in mountainous regions for vehicles requiring high power and rapid refueling. Convinced of the importance of developing a structured, coherent, and interconnected network of stations in Savoie and Haute-Savoie, we committed to this project in February 2020 with the opening of the first station in Chambéry ( scheduled to close in 2025, this station is expected to be replaced by a new one with increased capacity by 2027 ). Since then, the network has expanded with the inauguration of stations in Moûtiers and Annecy, and the upcoming opening (announced for February 2026) of the Arv’Hy project station in Vougy, which has joined the HYmpulsion Network.

Bringing the number of charging stations in the Alpine region to 3, and to 4 by 2027, these investments seem essential to stimulate the development of electric vehicle usage. The goal is to encourage the deployment of private and public fleets, which can then leverage the existing charging network and services.

The 2030 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games are in sight.

This densification of the number of refueling stations in Savoie and Haute-Savoie is also part of the perspective of the 2030 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games (JOP 2030) which will be held in the French Alps.

This approach addresses several key imperatives: environmental impact, the event’s international image, and, above all, the need to ensure the decarbonization of passenger transport between competition venues. In this context, hydrogen emerges as the preferred decarbonization solution to guarantee intensive and zero-impact mobility throughout the Games. Stay tuned for updates via our network!
