Hyundai Engineering & Construction has completed the construction of a commercial water electrolysis-based hydrogen production base for the first time in Korea.

On the 24th, Hyundai E&C held a ceremony to complete a hydro electrolysis-based hydrogen production base at a renewable energy complex in Buan-gun, North Jeolla Province. The hydrogen production base, which was completed this time, is a project selected for the 2022 Water-Based Hydrogen Production Base Construction Project organized by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.

It is a construction project to build a facility that can produce, store, and supply hydrogen by applying water electrolysis (water electrolysis) technology to 5,000㎡ of land in a renewable energy theme park in Buan-gun. Hyundai Engineering & Construction was in charge of general design, equipment purchase, and construction by putting in specialized personnel in the hydrogen plant field.

By the end of this year, Hyundai Engineering & Construction will complete the operation optimization and system stabilization work through a trial run, and will produce more than 1 ton of commercial water electrolysis hydrogen per day, the largest in Korea, from 2026. One ton of hydrogen is enough to charge about 150 vehicles, and hydrogen produced here will be supplied to hydrogen research facilities and hydrogen charging stations in Buan-gun.

Buan-gun has the largest renewable energy base in Korea, including offshore wind power in the southwest region and Saemangeum water solar power. Research and production facilities related to solar power, wind power, and hydrogen are located in the renewable energy complex. Following the completion of the hydrogen production base, Hyundai Engineering & Construction is also carrying out a “master plan for the Buan hydrogen city development project and detailed facility plan.”

In addition to the Buan hydro electrolysis-based hydrogen production base, Hyundai Engineering & Construction is actively participating in various hydrogen infrastructure projects, including the demonstration of Korea’s first high-temperature water electrolysis 100 kW class system, the development of a large-capacity 5 MW plant-type PEM hydro electrolysis system, the establishment of a master plan for the Uljin hydrogen city development project, and the demonstration of clean hydrogen production (10 MW class) in connection with nuclear power plants.

In addition, it plans to establish a leading position in the global clean energy market by securing technologies and strengthening capabilities in renewable energy such as offshore wind power and solar power, carbon capture utilization (CCUS), biogas, and small module nuclear power plants (SMR).
