Hyundai Launches Hydrogen-Powered Refuse and Hook-Lift Trucks for Zero-Emission Waste Collection
yundai Hydrogen Mobility (HHM) is enabling municipal services and recycling centres to take a major step toward zero-emission operations. This summer, the first Hyundai hook-lift trucks and refuse collection vehicles with hydrogen-electric drive will become available. Hyundai combines the proven advantages of the XCIENT Fuel Cell truck with the requirements of net-zero transport: a range of over 400 km, refueling in just 15 minutes, full-day usability, diesel-comparable payload, low-noise operation – and of course: zero CO2 emissions.
With the launch of these new vehicles, a new era begins for waste management companies and municipal operators. For the first time, a proven and mass-produced truck – the Hyundai XCIENT Fuel Cell – is being equipped with body solutions specifically designed for waste logistics and municipal use. This sets new standards in sustainable heavy-duty transport, combining 100% electric drive with the benefits of green hydrogen.
This development is driven by Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility AG (HHM), based in Zurich, and its Munich-based subsidiary, HHM Germany GmbH (HHMG). Both companies specialise in hydrogen-electric heavy-duty vehicles and benefit from the technological know-how of Hyundai Motor Company.
Beat Hirschi, CEO of Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility AG, said:
Hyundai has long been a pioneer of the sustainable hydrogen ecosystem. Our goal is clear: we must decarbonise transport.
Green hydrogen, if used wisely, offers enormous potential. With more than 15 million kilometres and over 12’000 tonnes of CO2 saved on Swiss roads alone, the XCIENT Fuel Cell proves it works. With this experience, the know-how of our specialists, and strong partners at our side, we are making a substantial contribution to achieving net zero.»
The Hyundai XCIENT Fuel Cell combines the benefits of an eco-friendly drivetrain with high everyday utility: a range of more than 400 km, refueling in 15 minutes, full-day operation, payload comparable to a diesel truck, thanks to electric drive without engine noise, water vapor instead of exhaust fumes and of course: zero CO2 emissions.
Accumulated know-how, specific solutions
HHM and HHMG work with established body manufacturers who bring in-depth industry expertise. The XCIENT Fuel Cell chassis – available in 4×2 and 6×2 configurations with two wheelbase options – supports a total weight of up to 36 or 42 tonnes. It provides a robust and reliable platform for customised transport solutions.
The hook-lift truck features a Meiller hooklift system, based on the XCIENT Fuel Cell 6×2 chassis suitable for container lengths between 5.25 and 7.0 m.
For waste collection, the Terberg HS eSpeedline body system is mounted on the same chassis variants. It offers a fully self-powered setup, with up to 30 m³ of body volume and 7-8 hours of operating time.
Beat Hirschi, adds:
Many waste management companies and fleet operators are entering new territory with hydrogen-electric drive.
That’s why service, maintenance and investment security are so critical. This is where Hyundai excels. Backed by the Hyundai Motor Company as a global player, supported by our expert body partners and rooted in local markets, we offer our customers reliable, future-ready solutions – today, tomorrow and beyond.»
Both new body configurations are now available to order via HHM and HHMG.
