Hyundai Rotem Hydrogen Mobility Testing Laboratory Receives Minister’s Commendation for Best Safety Management
Hyundai Rotem announced on the 25th that it was selected as the Best Safety Management Laboratory at the “2025 Laboratory Safety Week” held at Korea University in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, and received the Minister’s Commendation from the Ministry of Science and ICT.
The Laboratory Safety Week event, held the previous day, is organized annually by the Ministry of Science and ICT. This year, it was especially held to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the enactment of the Laboratory Safety Act and to promote the creation of a safe research environment and the continuous development of a safety culture. Since 2013, the ministry has operated a certification system for outstanding laboratory safety management in order to strengthen laboratory safety management capabilities and to discover and disseminate standard models for safety management.
The laboratory selected as the Best Safety Management Laboratory this time is the Hydrogen Mobility Testing Laboratory under the Rail Solution (RS) R&D Hub. This laboratory conducts the advanced development and testing of fuel cell systems, which are core components of hydrogen railway vehicles, and is equipped with essential hydrogen supply facilities, battery packs, and safety detection systems required for testing. The Hydrogen Mobility Testing Laboratory was previously certified as an excellent laboratory for safety management by the Ministry of Science and ICT in February.
The Best Safety Management Laboratories were selected from among approximately 300 laboratories that received certification for outstanding safety management over the past year, from September of last year to August of this year. Of these, the top 9 laboratories received the Minister’s Commendation from the Ministry of Science and ICT, while the remaining 11 received the Head of the National Research Safety Management Headquarters Award.
Additionally, Hyundai Rotem obtained further certifications for outstanding laboratory safety management this year for the Variable Load Combination Testing Facility at the RS R&D Hub and the Unmanned Systems Testing Laboratory at the Defense Solution (DS) R&D Hub. As a result, Hyundai Rotem has received a total of four certifications: one Best Safety Management Laboratory and three Excellent Safety Management Laboratories.
The Variable Load Combination Testing Facility develops and tests propulsion system electrical components for railway vehicles and is equipped with high-performance test equipment essential for measuring the performance of high-speed rotating devices such as motors. With a precision variable load system in place, it is possible to measure energy consumption for each railway vehicle operation pattern. The Unmanned Systems Testing Laboratory is a facility for manufacturing and testing unmanned vehicles equipped with artificial intelligence (AI)-based ground unmanned system technologies, and is equipped with test facilities such as unmanned platforms.
Hyundai Rotem conducts regular safety inspections and carries out on-site precision safety diagnoses through professional organizations to create a safe research environment. The company has also worked to identify and improve hazardous and risky factors, and provides safety management information and education tailored to the characteristics of each laboratory to ensure the safety of researchers. In addition, Hyundai Rotem has improved material storage methods, optimized monitoring systems, and carried out construction to enhance safety in high-voltage testing.
