Iberdrola trusts Schneider Electric to boost the energy efficiency of the largest green hydrogen plant in Europe.

Schneider Electric, a leader in the digital transformation of energy management and automation, has announced its collaboration with Iberdrola to promote the process and energy control of its plants of green hydrogen, starting this collaboration at the Puertollano plant. With this collaboration, the two companies align to achieve common objectives such as the fight against climate change and energy independence.

The Puertollano plant is the largest green hydrogen plant for industrial use in Europe and the first in a network of strategic plants to promote hydrogen in Spain. Its green hydrogen contributes to decarbonizing the primary sector and industrial activities that are difficult to electrify. It has one of the largest green hydrogen production systems through electrolysis in the world (20 MW), from 100% renewable electricity.

Electricity is obtained from a dedicated 100 MW solar photovoltaic plant, a lithium-ion battery system, with a storage capacity of 20 MWh, ensuring a zero-emission value chain in the production process.

In such a strategic infrastructure, it is especially relevant to achieve maximum optimization and energy efficiency. For this reason, Iberdrola has trusted a set of solutions from Schneider Electric. Among them, the latest generation DCS EcoStruxure Control Expert for Aveva System Platform stands out, which allows the process control system and the electrical system to be managed on the same platform, covering the entire life cycle. This system maximizes the control and coordination of the energy systems in the plant, thus increasing its performance, energy and operational efficiency. It incorporates three essential layers for optimal and efficient control: hardware, control and operation software, and operational intelligence.

The DCS system is cyber secure by design, complying with IEC62443, and provides solutions at the Hot Standby and Safety SIL3 redundancy level, at the hardware and software level, as well as in the multiple integrations with plant applications.

The operational intelligence layer is developed on the Aveva PI System, and is the basis on which advanced data analytics solutions are being developed to respond to the different business models demanded by this sector.

Schneider Electric’s set of solutions for the Puertollano plant has allowed Iberdrola to develop the standard for future Green hydrogen plants.

Olga García, VP of Industrial Automation by Schneider Electric Iberia said:

The collaboration with Iberdrola is a very important step towards our shared objectives of combating climate change and achieving energy independence through sustainable sources.

“The Puertollano plant is a strategic project to promote the use of hydrogen in Spain and contribute to the decarbonization of sectors that are difficult to electrify and we are very proud to be able to accompany our client on this path.”
