Indian Railways has began working on hydrogen-powered trains. Indian Railways has also invited bids for retrofitting diesel-electric multiple units (DEMU) with hydrogen fuel cell-based technology in the 89 km Sonipat-Jind section of Northern Railway.

Indian Railways Organization of Alternate Fuel (IROAF), the green fuel vertical of Indian Railways, has invited bids for hydrogen fuel cell-based trains on the railway network. The project shall commence in the 89-km Sonipat-Jind section of the Northern Railway.

The initiative is undertaken with respect to Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) Batteries and National Hydrogen Mission — two flagship programs of the government to meet the targets of reducing Green House Gas (GHG) emission under Paris Climate Agreement 2015 and Mission Net Zero Carbon Emission Railway by 2030.

Accordingly, there has been a recent budgetary pronouncement to kick off the concept of Hydrogen Mobility in the Country, the Railway Ministry said in a statement.

Initially, 2 DEMU rakes will be converted and later, 2 hybrid locos will be converted based on Hydrogen Fuel cell power movement. There will be no change in the driving console. Also, the project will lead to a saving of Rs 2.3 crore annually, the statement added.

Indian Railways wants to see whether Diesel-powered DEMU can be run by hydrogen fuel cell-powered technology which will not only reduce costs but also carbon footprint of the national carrier.

“The retrofitting of diesel-powered DEMU and converting it into hydrogen fuel-powered train set will not only save the cost to the tune of Rs 2.3 crores annually by converting from diesel to hydrogen but also save the carbon footprint (NO2) of 11.12 kilotons per annum and particulates matter of 0.72-kilo tonnes per annum,” the statement added.
