Italy – Pichetto: Hydrogen is a fundamental vehicle for decarbonisation
On the National Plan for Hydrogen
We are on the home stretch because the overall picture is being finalized. I really think that in November we will close the game with this National Plan, which must be ambitious but realistic.
This was stated by the Minister of the Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, speaking at the Chamber, at the “Italian Hydrogen summit” conference organised by H2IT, the Italian Hydrogen Association, aimed at promoting technologies and systems for the production and use of hydrogen.
Pichetto said on the sidelines of the conference.,
Hydrogen is one of the fundamental vehicles for decarbonization and is a great opportunity for our country that has already seen a strong investment by the government,
He concluded,
We have invested more than 3 billion on the hydrogen front and are working on large infrastructures. Furthermore, at the end of May I signed an agreement with Germany that includes a 3.500-kilometer corridor with Africa, because the European framework foresees a demand for hydrogen of about 2030 million tons by 20. The forecast is that we will be able to do 10 million at a European level and 10 million of imports and therefore Italy is at the center of hydrogen transits,
declared Pichetto,
Italy is at the center of hydrogen transits coming from Africa and this determines a national investment and others that are part of the Mattei Plan and that foresee the involvement of the North African countries where hydrogen can be produced,
As a ministry, The minister underlined,
We are moving forward and in a reasonable time frame we will have a national plan for hydrogen that concerns both production and Italy’s strategy as a hub for the transfer to the continental part of Europe,
Pichetto in his speech to the Chamber of Deputies, continued :
Hydrogen is a challenge that we intend to take up to make Italy a hub for both production and transport of the vector to Europe.
“The national plan for hydrogen includes significant improvements; we already have a first draft under evaluation with medium and long-term scenarios that we plan to officially present within a month. We are in the definition phase,”
He concluded,
we can say that Italy on the hydrogen front is in step with Europe and with the objectives that we must achieve.
