Jeonju City-Hyundai Motor Company Completes Detailed Investigation of 147 Hydrogen City Buses in Operation – H2 leaks detected and Immediate corrective measures were taken

Jeonju City, Jeollabuk-do Special Self-Governing Province and Hyundai Motor Company have completed a detailed safety inspection, including explosion prevention, of 147 hydrogen city buses operating in the Jeonju area by dispatching a specialized inspection team.

Very small H2 leaks detected and Immediate corrective measures were taken for minor issues, and a regular inspection system is planned to maintain safety standards.

Jeonju City, in collaboration with Hyundai Motor Company, has completed a thorough safety inspection of 147 hydrogen city buses operating in the region. This proactive initiative follows safety concerns stemming from a hydrogen bus explosion in another area and aims to reassure citizens of the safety of eco-friendly public transport options.

Comprehensive Safety Inspection
From December 30 to January 10, a specialized team from Hyundai’s Jeonju High-Tech Center, comprising four teams and eight experts, conducted intensive diagnostics of hydrogen fuel buses. The inspections covered five transportation companies and examined key components, including hydrogen fuel supply lines and electric control units.

Key Findings and Immediate Actions

  • Hydrogen Fuel Supply Lines: Slight looseness in connecting bolts was detected on 17 buses, and immediate adjustments were made to comply with torque standards.
  • Electric Control Units: Out of 37 units per bus, minor contact issues were identified on three buses, and necessary repairs were performed.

Safety Enhancements and Future Plans
To maintain safety, Jeonju City and Hyundai Motor Company have developed a detailed safety management manual specifying inspection cycles and methods. Future initiatives include:

  • Regular Inspections: Establishing a systematic hydrogen bus safety inspection process through agreements with transportation companies and manufacturers.
  • Operator Training: Conducting specialized training at manufacturers’ facilities to enhance the maintenance capabilities of transportation operators.
  • Further Safety Measures: Implementing additional precautions based on findings from the National Institute of Scientific Investigation’s ongoing analysis of a recent hydrogen bus explosion in another region.

Commitment to Carbon Neutrality and Public Confidence
Choi Jun-beom, Director of the Public Transportation Bureau in Jeonju, emphasized the importance of hydrogen buses in reducing carbon emissions and fostering sustainable transportation.

Hydrogen city buses are greatly loved by citizens as an eco-friendly means of transportation and play an important role in carbon neutrality. We will do our best to ensure that citizens can use hydrogen city buses with confidence, putting their safety first.
