Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (KRICT) has signed a contract with Kosdaq-listed Chemtros over the transfer of process technology of PFSA a key material for hydrogen fuel cell.
The independently developed material called perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) ionomer, which plays a role of delivering hydrogen ions, is widely used in hydrogen fuel cell, energy storage system (ESS), distributed power (small power generation facilities using renewable energy), and electrolytic cell systems.
The manufacturing technology of the material can be implemented by only a handful of global companies due to complicated and long production processes and sensitive variables such as humidity, temperature and explosiveness. Korea has depended entirely on imports for the material.
The research institute has transferred nine-step manufacturing solutions including raw material production to ionomer manufacturing to Chemtros. The two entities are working together to build a production facility with an annual output of 100 tons. Commercial production is set to start by the first half of next year.
