KOSPO Completes Nation’s First Hydrogen-LNG Co-firing Power Plant
Korea Southern Power Co., Ltd. (KOSPO) has completed the nation’s first hydrogen and LNG co-firing power plant, enabling a stable energy supply to Sejong City, the nation’s administrative hub.
KOSPO held a ceremony to mark the completion of the New Sejong Bitdream power plant at the Sejong Bitdream Headquarters in Sejong City on Nov. 28.
New Sejong Bitdream was incorporated as a collective energy project in the 4th Basic Plan for Electricity Supply and Demand announced by the government in 2007. It consists of constructing a 630-megawatt power plant and facilities to supply thermal energy with a capacity of 340 gigacalories per hour.
Through the construction of the New Sejong Bitdream power plant, KOSPO will produce electricity, and Korea District Heating Engineering Co., Ltd. will be in charge of the heat supply business, with both institutions responsible for Sejong’s energy infrastructure.
The New Sejong Bitdream power plant began construction on July 1, 2021, and commenced commercial operation in June last year. With the comprehensive completion, it has become possible to supply stable energy sources to 390,000 Sejong citizens.
Notably, KOSPO introduced a large gas turbine capable of co-firing hydrogen up to 50%, a first in the nation, at New Sejong Bitdream, drawing significant attention. They plan to start full-scale hydrogen co-firing from 2028, which is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 17% compared to LNG full combustion.
Kim Joon-dong, CEO of KOSPO, said,
I would like to express my gratitude to the government, local governments, and local residents for their generous support in the construction of New Sejong Bitdream,
Kim Joon-dong, emphasizing:
New Sejong Bitdream will not only lead to Sejong City’s energy self-sufficiency but also faithfully serve as a cornerstone for future energy transition.
