KVV – Other companies in Hessen are joining the cross-sector hydrogen initiative.

Together for Hessen as a business and industrial location

In the spring of this year, seven leading Hessian companies came together and offered the state government active support in setting up a regional hydrogen economy. With Kasseler Verkehrs- und Versorgungs-GmbH and TÜV Hessen, two other well-known companies have joined the initiative. The partners are renewing their joint offer to support the state of Hesse in setting up a regional hydrogen economy.

The feedback from the responsible Ministry of Economic Affairs, Energy, Transport and Housing is positive. It has promised to participate in the consultation process. The initiative is very happy to do so: Due to the recently adopted amendment to the Federal Climate Protection Act, which provides for a further tightening of national climate targets such as net greenhouse gas neutrality by 2045, time is pressing. And hydrogen has a crucial role to play in achieving these goals.

According to the conviction of all members, all the prerequisites are in place in Hesse to make the state a future location for hydrogen. They advocate a pragmatic, cross-sectoral and technology-open approach. From the point of view of the partners, this is the only way to set new impulses for the Hessian economy and to achieve the ambitious climate protection goals to which they are committed.

clearly confess. They want to actively contribute to Hessen becoming a pioneer in climate protection. In addition, they want to live up to their responsibility for future generations. At the same time, the initiative is committed to ensuring that Hesse remains a strong business location even after the imminent change. This is the only way to ensure employment, growth and prosperity for citizens.

The fact that the companies are convinced of the power of hydrogen for climate protection has already been proven at various points: Fuel cell trains refuelled in Frankfurt-Höchst will roll through the Taunus in the future. 3.5-ton delivery vans with fuel cells are to be on the Hessian roads in 2022.

And a concept is investigating how green hydrogen can be produced from climate-neutral electricity for mobility applications. Promising beginnings have been made. On the way to the hydrogen economy, there is still a lot to do, many course to set and open questions to clarify. The cross-sectoral initiative is very happy to get involved in this process.

Quotes from the partners:

Philipp Walter, Global Head of Business Development Heraeus Precious Metals:

Heraeus warmly welcomes the new members, Kasseler Verkehrs- und Versorgungs-GmbH and TÜV Hessen.

“It is important to bring together an extensive network of companies to build and use hydrogen as a competitive and efficient energy source.”

Dr. Joachim Kreysing, Managing Director of Infraserv Höchst.

It is good that our initiative is growing and becoming more diverse.

“The operating company of Industriepark Höchst has been active in the field of hydrogen and fuel cell technology for years. A hydrogen filling station for trains is currently being built on the 4.6 square kilometre research and production site, and passenger cars have been able to be refuelled with hydrogen at Industriepark Höchst since 2006.”

“The chemical industry will continue to drive forward the further development of key future technologies,” says Dr. Kreysing. “It is important to also use transition technologies with which we can achieve CO2 savings very quickly.”

Dr. Michael Maxelon, Managing Director of Kasseler Verkehrs- und Versorgungs-GmbH:

We are part of the comprehensive energy, heat and mobility transition and actively support the development of a regional hydrogen economy.

Managing Director of Kasseler Verkehrs- und Versorgungs-GmbH, explaining the commitment. “To this end, our North Hessian network of research, industry, energy suppliers and the mobility industry will contribute to the initiative.”

Dr. Constantin H. Alsheimer, CEO of Mainova AG, says:

The heating sector is the decisive building block of the energy transition.

“Hydrogen must therefore also play a decisive role in the heating market. From our point of view, it has the potential to replace natural gas completely, affordably, reliably and climate-neutrally by 2045. However, especially at the beginning, the demand cannot be covered by green hydrogen alone. That’s why we need openness to technology in manufacturing in order to achieve the necessary speed in reducing greenhouse gases.”

Tim Evison, Senior Vice President Messer SE & Co. KGaA:

Not only the transport sector, but also the industry of Hesse are now expressly obliged to make a significant contribution to the decarbonisation of our state by 2030.

“Among other things, we will succeed in this challenge if we apply renewable hydrogen in the respective operational processes and use it as a clean, affordable and practical fuel. To this end, we use our gases experience and Messer’s application technology knowledge – together with the partners of the Hydrogen Initiative – in an energetic, targeted and, above all, technology-neutral manner. In this way, Hesse will be strengthened as a business location by the energy transition.”

Uwe Hochgeschurtz, CEO of Opel:

In addition to battery-electric vehicles, we also rely on hydrogen and fuel cell drives.

“No CO2 emissions, long ranges and refuelling within just three minutes are major advantages of this technology. That is why we have developed light commercial vehicles in the 3.5-tonne class with fuel cell drive. In total, we want to produce a first series of 2,000 vehicles of the Opel Vivaro-e HYDROGEN and its sister models from the end of 2021 to 2023. We are counting on a further rapid expansion of the network of hydrogen filling stations in Hesse in order to enable the success of fuel cell technology.”

Prof. Knut Ringat, Managing Director and Spokesman of the Management Board of the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund, says:

With the fuel cell trains in the Taunus network, RMV is breaking new ground and bringing the world’s largest hydrogen train fleet in passenger transport onto the rails.

“Fuel cell trains could also be an alternative for many other diesel train lines if there were hydrogen available nearby and a corresponding refuelling infrastructure. However, both are currently still rare. Hesse therefore needs a strong regional hydrogen economy that quickly provides hydrogen in many places – so that public transport, which is already environmentally friendly, can save even more pollutants in even more places.”

Jürgen Bruder, CSO and member of the management board of TÜV Hessen, says:

Consistent climate protection and digitization are the game changers worldwide for a future worth living for so many people on our planet.

Max Viessmann, Co-CEO Viessmann Group:

The heating sector can already make a decisive contribution to increasing the pace of building decarbonisation.

“And this is necessary in order to achieve the EU’s new climate protection targets for 2030: a 55 percent reduction in CO2 compared to 1990. Hydrogen can and will make an immense contribution to the design of habitats for future generations, but its potential in the heating market is grossly underestimated.”
