Lhyfe claims European lead for EU’s strictest green hydrogen standard
The move follows its earlier success in May 2025 when its Bouin site became the first French facility to receive the RFNBO certification.
Hydrogen player Lhyfe has announced that it has secured RFNBO (Renewable Fuel of Non-Biological Origin) certification for all four of its operational sites in France and Germany, reinforcing its ambition to lead in Europe’s decarbonisation push.
The move follows its earlier success in May 2025 when its Bouin site became the first French facility to receive the certification, and now includes the Buléon, Bessières and Schwäbisch Gmünd plants. According to the company, the sites together amount to 21 MW of installed capacity, theoretically enabling up to 8.3 tonnes of green hydrogen production per day.
The RFNBO standard, introduced under the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive (RED III), is among the most demanding certifications for green hydrogen: it requires comprehensive traceability, full life-cycle greenhouse gas accounting, and assurance that electrolysis is powered by 100 % renewable electricity
The hydrogen sector still grapples with high costs, infrastructure bottlenecks and competition from alternative decarbonisation routes. Critics warn that “green hydrogen” must not become a catch-all justification for carbon-intensive practices hidden behind certification claims.
By spreading its sites across France and Germany and deploying a sizable container fleet, Lhyfe believes it can reduce transport inefficiencies and bring hydrogen closer to end users.
