Linde invests $90 million to increase hydrogen production in Alabama.

Linde has made an approximately $90m investment to increase the liquid hydrogen production capacity at its facility location in McIntosh, Alabama.

The industrial gas giant confirmed today (5th December) that its McIntosh plant can now produce up to 30 tonnes per day of liquid hydrogen for the local merchant market.

Additional hydrogen produced at the site will meet increasing demand for hydrogen from Linde’s existing and new customers in various end markets, including manufacturing and electronics.

It will also supply hydrogen to Linde’s space launch and mobility customers.

Todd Lawson, Vice-President of the East Region at Linde, said, “Over the past decade, we have continued to expand our robust hydrogen production and supply network in the US, establishing Linde as the largest supplier of liquid hydrogen in the country.”

At the start of the year (January 2023), Linde also increased its green hydrogen production capacity in California with the deployment of several five-megawatt proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysers at existing plants.

To achieve its goal, the company said it will build, own, and operate a new PEM electrolyser at its plant in the California city of Ontario to support growing demand from the mobility market.

It is hoped that the electrolyser will be operational in the second half of 2024. The electrolyser will help the plant produce enough green hydrogen to avoid up to 75,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.

In turn, these capacity expansion projects will support the US National Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap, published in June 2023.

Designed to accelerate the production, processing, delivery, storage, and use of clean hydrogen, the roadmap is part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, which has announced over $470bn worth of investment into manufacturing and clean energies.

The strategy examines a strategic opportunity for the domestic production of 10 million metric tonnes of clean hydrogen annually by 2030, 20 million metric tonnes annually by 2040, and 50 million metric tonnes annually by 2050.

The National Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap was developed by the US Department of Energy (DOE) in partnership with other federal agencies to support Biden’s ambitions for the country.
