Lotte SK Enerroute Launches Commercial Operations at Ulsan Hydrogen Power Plant

Second Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power Plant Completed · 20MW Generation Capacity Maximizes Energy Efficiency · Stable Supply System Built on Hydrogen Pipeline Network

Lotte SK Enerroute’s second hydrogen fuel cell power plant, ‘Ulsan Hydrogen Power No. 1,’ has commenced commercial operation. Lotte SK Enerroute announced on the 13th that it has successfully completed construction and begun operation of Ulsan Hydrogen Power No. 1.

Lotte SK Enerroute is a joint venture established in 2022 by SK Gas (018670), Lotte Chemical (011170), and Air Liquide Korea for hydrogen business. Ulsan Hydrogen Power No. 1 is the second power plant following Ulsan Hydrogen Power No. 2, which began commercial operation in June of last year.

Ulsan Hydrogen Power No. 1 has a generation capacity of 20MW (megawatts), and the company is pursuing its project with the goal of completing a total 80MW power plant complex by the end of this year.

The power plant is installed within the Lotte Chemical Ulsan plant site and will operate for the next 20 years. It produces electricity by receiving by-product hydrogen generated from SK Gas subsidiaries and Lotte Chemical group factories. This is an eco-friendly power generation method that converts by-product hydrogen, which was previously combusted or utilized for low-value purposes, into a high-value energy source, reducing additional carbon emissions.

Additionally, by establishing a hydrogen pipeline network between multiple hydrogen suppliers and the power plant, it is expected to create a stable supply system and contribute to expanding hydrogen infrastructure in the Ulsan region.

Ulsan Hydrogen Power No. 1 will be linked to an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) system being promoted with government funding as part of the ‘Ulsan Mipo National Industrial Complex Energy Self-Sufficiency Infrastructure Construction and Operation Project’ supervised by the Korea Industrial Complex Corporation. ORC equipment is technology that recovers waste heat generated during fuel cell power generation to produce additional electricity. It can improve power generation efficiency by recycling thermal energy that was previously unused.

Lotte SK Enerroute plans to establish a high-efficiency energy production model combining eco-friendly power generation using by-product hydrogen with waste heat recovery power generation, and contribute to creating a hydrogen-based energy ecosystem in the Ulsan region.

Gil Ho-moon, Co-CEO of Lotte SK Enerroute, said,

The hydrogen fuel cell power generation project is a core business in the journey to convert hydrogen resources in the Ulsan region into energy and ultimately achieve net zero

Adding,

We will continue to pursue various projects that organically connect the production, supply, and utilization of hydrogen to contribute to revitalizing the domestic hydrogen economy.

Shim Mi-hyang, Co-CEO of Lotte SK Enerroute, emphasized,

The completion of Ulsan Hydrogen Power No. 1 is significant in that it has increased the utilization value of hydrogen resources within the industrial complex through eco-friendly power generation using by-product hydrogen,

Adding,

We will continue to expand our hydrogen power generation business while also developing into clean hydrogen utilization fields to contribute to building an eco-friendly hydrogen energy ecosystem.
