Luxembourg gets its first hydrogen filling station.
After years of waiting, the time has come: Luxembourg is getting its first hydrogen filling station. Details will be presented by Transport Minister François Bausch (“déi gréng”), Energy Minister Claude Turmes (“déi gréng”) and two representatives of the oil company TotalEnergies at a press conference next Wednesday.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Sustainability told the Tageblatt in 2017, said:
There must be an interest in installing such an infrastructure in Luxembourg.
At that time, interest still seemed to be extremely low: the demand for a hydrogen filling station was not particularly high, as not a single hydrogen car was registered in Luxembourg at the time. However, there have already been requests for hydrogen filling stations.
The hydrogen car has many advantages: First and foremost, it emits no emissions locally. It is an electric car that does not draw its electricity from a battery, but from a fuel cell.
This converts hydrogen into water – and thus generates electricity for the electric motor. Another advantage: The car can easily refuel hydrogen and does not need a long charging time like batteries.
The catch: The technology is quite expensive, both in terms of filling stations – the hydrogen must be stored at a pressure of 700 bar – and in the cars. New cars – such as the Toyota Mirai and the Hyundai Nexeo – currently cost around 70,000 euros.
Another problem: The production of hydrogen is relatively energy-intensive. As a result, the hydrogen car has not yet been able to fully establish itself on the market.
