Made in Italy hydrogen – H2IT Association celebrates the passing of 100 members.

Hydrogen made in Italy is increasingly a team. The H2IT Association celebrates the overcoming of 100 members and looks to the future. Objective: to continue to give impetus to the supply chain to make it the protagonist of the energy transition in Italy

From multinationals to innovative SMEs: between 2019 and 2022 H2IT quadrupled the number of members, coming to represent companies and research centers of different sizes and sectors. The growth of the Association is the mirror of the great potential of the hydrogen carrier for decarbonization and ecological transition

The future of energy also and above all passes through hydrogen. The European Union is well aware of this, and has decided to bet on reducing CO2 emissions by 2050.

And Italy also knows this, which in recent years between the elaboration of a National Strategy for hydrogen still in progress, and the 3.64 billion euros provided for by the PNRR has inaugurated a season of investments to develop a strong supply chain also in our country.

A goal that, since its inception in 2005, is also the ambition of H2IT, the Italian Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association, which today celebrates a great goal: the overcoming of 100 members, including large, medium and small companies, research centers and universities.

Hydrogen has only risen to the forefront of environmental policies and news for a few years. And since then the interest of institutions and companies has never stopped. Not surprisingly, only from 2019 to today, H2IT has quadrupled the number of members.

And it has succeeded by acting as a reference point for the supply chain, bringing the ideas of those who deal with hydrogen daily to the attention of politics, economic actors and public opinion.

Moreover, it is a sector in strong growth, so much so that, according to the latest data from the H2IT Observatory, all the companies associated with H2IT expect an increase in turnover in three years, with very strong repercussions on employment, even if at present it is still difficult to find qualified personnel.

In other words, the supply chain has everything it needs to develop, but a greater effort is needed to eliminate the critical issues that hold its potential.

Like the absence of a clear regulatory framework, a topic that has always been at the heart of H2IT and indicated by 60% of the sample as the absolute priority to follow.

For this reason, already in 2016 the Association supported the competent Ministries in the elaboration of the “National Plan for Hydrogen Mobility” (then updated in 2019) and tightened, in 2018, a collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior for the drafting of the “Technical regulation of fire prevention for the design, construction and operation of hydrogen distribution systems for transport.”

In addition, in 2021 H2IT met several times with political decision-makers, exposing its indications for the PNRR during a hearing in the Chamber of Deputies.

In the end, the Plan dedicated 3.64 billion euros to the development of supply chains for the production, distribution and end uses of hydrogen: a great success that must not remain isolated.

Now, in addition to keeping the confrontation with the legislator alive, H2IT also aims to strengthen the network of companies and research centers active in the hydrogen market, with the aim of making it mature and decisive for the ecological revolution in our country.

In this case, support for innovation is also necessary to create products and services that are essential for the growth of the sector.

Also in this sense, the collaboration with Intesa Sanpaolo Innovation Center for the INNOVAHY project should be read, an initiative aimed at encouraging the development path of innovative SMEs and startups in the hydrogen sector.

Alberto Dossi, President of H2IT. When the H2IT adventure began, hydrogen did not
appear on the agendas of the competent bodies, said:

The great result we celebrate today rewards over 15 years of hard work by the Association.

“Now, the route taken by the European and Italian institutions finally confirms the importance of the supply chain to achieve the decarbonization objectives.”

“But we need to make it grow by creating a system, speaking with a single voice that can best support the efforts of many companies, large and small, Italian and international. I would like to thank the 100 important companies in the sector that have trusted us and who have found all this in H2IT.”

“But we do not stop there: we will continue in our commitment to eliminate the critical issues that prevent the development of the hydrogen supply chain, dialoguing with politics, civil society and all companies that want to know one of the keys to the energy transition.”
