More Than a Hundred Initiatives Registered in Spain in The First Aeh2 Census of Hydrogen Projects

More than a hundred initiatives registered in Spain in the first AeH2 Census of Hydrogen Projects.

The Spanish Hydrogen Association (AeH2) published on its website the interactive map of the Census of Hydrogen Projects , which in a first phase compiles Demonstration Projects —TRL 7 or higher— that are under development or active in Spain.

This tool offers a way to visualize in a global, summarized and updated way the status of the hydrogen sector in the country, based on data provided by the AeH2 partners.

To date, the census includes a total of 123 projects that span the entire hydrogen value chain and come from 46 associated entities.

The map was created with the aim of giving visibility to the hydrogen projects that are being carried out —or that are planned— in the country, and as an analysis tool for both experts and Public Administrations.

Comparison with the Hydrogen Roadmap

According to the report published together with the census , the analysis of the registered projects forecasts a progressive increase in the production of renewable hydrogen compared to previous years. In this sense, 56% of the projects registered involve the use of renewable energy sources through direct connections, and 91% of the projects plan to use clean energy , some through power purchase agreements (PPAs, for their acronym in English).

On the other hand, the hydrogen valleys (hydrogen production and more than one use) and integrated projects (hydrogen production and a single use) represent 34% of the total initiatives registered; an indicator of the importance that is being given to the economy of scale to obtain renewable hydrogen at a reasonable cost, while ensuring the demand for the hydrogen produced.

Census data also forecasts a strong appetite for hydrogen production that is nearly triple the Roadmap forecast by the end of the decade, bringing capacity to 11 GW by 2030 .

This optimistic figure —which is in line with the forecasts of the latest Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC) update— reflects a declaration of intent conditioned on the increase in financing possibilities and the support of Public Administrations at all levels.

In the field of mobility, 56% of the projects registered are aimed at road transport and there is a significant deviation between the number of projected hydrogen refueling stations -21 with public access- with the objectives established by the Roadmap of Hydrogen —between 100 and 150 of public access by 2030—.

Hydrogen in industry

Regarding the use of hydrogen in industry, the report indicates that, of the 17 projects focused on this area, 67% are focused on its use in oil refining and the petrochemical industry , while 15% is intended for the production of ammonia. The rest of the projects focus on the food , glass and ceramic industries . The new use of hydrogen in the production of synthetic fuels in the hydrocarbons sector stands out.

What type of projects is the investment focused on?

With the data obtained from the 123 projects that have participated in the Census, a total investment —mostly planned— of close to 21,000 million euros is expected , which would greatly exceed the 8,900 million estimated by the Hydrogen Roadmap. for the period 2020-2030.

Of these, 72% would go to hydrogen production, 14% to distribution and another 14% to projects with one or more uses, such as valleys and integrated projects.

It is important to note that the investment figure presented in the report does not fully reflect the actual investment , due to the confidentiality of some projects, so it is presumed that the final amount could be even higher. The analysis estimates that the total public financing for the projects registered is around 200 million euros —of the total of 21,000 million—; a figure that could indicate the need to strengthen the public financing mechanisms available in the coming years.

New tool to take the pulse of hydrogen

The AeH2 Census of Hydrogen Projects is presented as an opportunity to have a comprehensive vision of the hydrogen value chain in the country, facilitate strategic decision-making, estimate economic potential, foster collaboration and innovation, and carry out a follow-up of the objectives established in the sector.

Highlights:

  • The first phase of the census of AeH2 hydrogen projects only includes Demonstration Projects TRL 7 or higher led, or in which Association members participate.
  • The analysis of the census data forecasts a total investment close to 21,000 million euros until 2030, which would exceed the estimates of the Hydrogen Roadmap. Renewable hydrogen production would rise to 11 GW planned for 2030, in line with the forecasts of the latest PNIEC update.
