Netherlands – BAM introduces first construction machine with hydrogen combustion engine.

BAM Infra Nederland – in close collaboration with Koninklijke van Twist *) – has successfully converted a diesel-powered asphalt spreading paver into a machine with a hydrogen combustion engine. The engine emits virtually no nitrogen oxide and saves approximately 80,420 kilograms of CO₂ on an annual basis.

Virtually no nitrogen oxide emissions

The asphalt spreading paver is the first machine in the Dutch construction industry powered by a hydrogen combustion engine. The use of this asphalt spreading paver saves around 150 litres of diesel per eight-hour working day.

This equates to a reduction of more than 80,420 kilograms of CO₂ annually and virtually no emissions of nitrogen oxide. The hydrogen tank can be refilled in 10 to 15 minutes.

Also suitable for low-quality hydrogen

Often fuel cells are used to convert hydrogen into electricity. Instead, BAM and Van Twist have used a hydrogen combustion engine. Unlike a fuel cell, the quality of hydrogen is not important for a hydrogen combustion engine.

This asphalt spreading paver can therefore operate on any quality hydrogen. This saves on cleaning costs during the production of hydrogen and allows the use of residual flows of hydrogen as fuel.
