Netherlands – Residents of Noordenveld get new hydrogen-powered garbage truck.

Residents of Noordenveld can see it from next week: our new hydrogen-powered garbage truck. Councilor Alex Wekema received the keys to the car last Wednesday. He received this from director Wim van Nispen of ESA Trucks, which delivered the car.

Noordenveld participates in the REVIVE project, which is co-financed by the European Union. In addition to Noordenveld, 7 other European municipalities are participating in the project, including Groningen, Amsterdam and Antwerp. The hydrogen cars fit within the objective of reducing CO2 emissions in the longer term.

Green vehicle, green appearance

Councilor Wekema is pleased with the new addition:

This new garbage truck not only looks clean, but is also really clean. It emits no CO2 and also runs almost silently through the streets.

“The green color of the container ensures that the car really stands out and fits in nicely with the green character of the car.”

Noordenveld currently has three diesel garbage trucks. With the arrival of the hydrogen truck, the oldest garbage truck is said goodbye. The current white top-up containers will now also be replaced by containers in Noordenveld green when they are finished.

Drivers make test rounds

Test rounds will be made with the new car in the coming days. This way our drivers can get used to driving and emptying containers with the new vehicle.

This project is supported by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership and its members Hydrogen Europe and Hydrogen Europe Research under grant agreement No. 779589.

The EU-funded REVIVE project is the largest demonstration of hydrogen fuel cell garbage trucks to date. 11 vehicles will be equipped with a fuel cell drivetrain and will be deployed at 6 locations in Europe. The project demonstrates the potential for decarbonizing heavy vehicles while maintaining the operational flexibility needed for urban waste collection.

The Clean Hydrogen Partnership supports research and innovation activities in hydrogen technologies in Europe. It aims to accelerate the development of advanced market-ready green hydrogen applications in end-user sectors such as energy, transport, construction and industry. At the same time, the competitiveness of the green hydrogen value chain is strengthened. The members of the partnership are the European Commission, the fuel cell and hydrogen industry represented by Hydrogen Europe and the research community represented by Hydrogen Europe Research.
