Netherlands – Safe introduction of hydrogen into society thanks to the Hydrogen Safety Innovation Program.

The energy transition is both important and challenging. Hydrogen plays a prominent role in the switch from fossil fuels to sustainable energy generation and application. Significant growth is expected in the coming years. Every reason to ensure that safety issues surrounding hydrogen are addressed in society. That is what the Hydrogen Safety Innovation Program (WVIP) has done over the past four years with a broad partnership of companies, governments, knowledge institutions, safety regions and environmental services.

Although hydrogen has been used in industry for years, its large-scale application in public spaces is relatively new. The WVIP consortium has systematically identified safety issues surrounding the production, storage, distribution and use of hydrogen.

The most important challenges for the large-scale introduction of hydrogen have been tackled in a structured manner by the collaborating parties. These are;

  1. uniform licensing;
  2. incident response and risk management for emergency responders;
  3. laws and regulations;
  4. uniform risk picture.

In addition, the safety aspects and risks have been mapped with a number of example cases. Extensive information and publications can be found on the Our work around safety (WVIP) page .

The WVIP has given an important boost to hydrogen safety in society. A broad community of collaborating parties has emerged that has made an important contribution to the implementation of the Climate Agreement. The central management of safety issues was of great importance. H2Platform (predecessor of NLHydrogen) and Deltalinqs were the initiators and secretary, NEN took care of the program management of the WVIP. The hydrogen program received support from NLHydrogen, which is following up on the WVIP with a Community of Practice.

Hydrogen safety remains as topical as ever. That is why the National Hydrogen Program, TKI New Gas |, will be organized on April 3 Top Sector Energy and NLHydrogen the first National Hydrogen Safety Congress. Want to know more or register? This can be done via this link
