Netherlands – Two new projects awarded funding to accelerate the green hydrogen transition

NWO has awarded funding to two new projects within the NGF GroenvermogenNL Call “Towards the future: Learning communities as drivers for the green hydrogen economy”. Following the award of grants to the first three learning communities at the end of last year, proposals from the West and East regions have now also been approved. The aim of the selected projects is to develop regional solutions for creating and shaping a responsive ecosystem of working, learning and innovation through practice-oriented research. Together, these regional ecosystems form a national ecosystem of working, learning and innovation to accelerate the hydrogen transition.

To accelerate the transition to green hydrogen, it is essential to encourage investment, innovation and scaling up. This will require nearly 38,000 well-trained professionals. With the labour market remaining tight and a significant skills gap, employment growth is uncertain. As part of the National Growth Fund project GroenvermogenNL, a human capital agenda (HCA) was developed with a large number of stakeholders to address these challenges in 2021. The human capital agenda in GroenvermogenNL is positioned as an ‘enabler’ for ambitious initiatives in hydrogen production, transport, storage and transshipment. It also supports large-scale applications in industry and other sectors such as mobility, transport and the built environment.

It is crucial for the hydrogen transition that working professionals acquire the necessary knowledge and skills in time and that sufficient personnel remain available without penalising other essential sectors. To achieve this, it is essential to develop a “responsive ecosystem” of working, learning and innovation, in which knowledge and skills development for (future) hydrogen professionals go hand in hand to shorten the time-to-job. The responsive ecosystem consists of collaborating parties involved in the entire hydrogen chain, from companies, education and training institutions (both public and private) to research institutions and governments.
