Netto Marken-Discount launches the future of logistics with hydrogen trucks
Netto Marken-Discount is bringing movement to sustainable logistics: At its branch in Henstedt-Ulzburg, the food retailer says it has added the first two hydrogen trucks to its fleet.
The emission-free vehicles are now delivering to stores in Northern Germany. With this pilot project, Netto is setting a precedent for more climate-friendly transportation solutions, thereby underscoring its long-standing commitment to a more sustainable corporate strategy.
Netto is launching its own hydrogen trucks into practical use – more climate-friendly, innovative, and future-oriented.
Christina Stylianou, Head of Corporate Communications at Netto Marken-Discount, says:
Sustainability is firmly anchored in our corporate strategy,
“By deploying hydrogen trucks, we are testing a pioneering technology to make our logistics processes even more environmentally friendly and further reduce our ecological footprint.”
Netto laid the foundation for the use of hydrogen in 2020 and was a partner in the construction of a hydrogen filling station for trucks in Schleswig-Holstein. The food retailer also tested five LNG semi-trailer tractors at its Hodenhagen branch in 2020, successfully covering a total distance of 2.2 million km during the test phase. The pilot phase now underway with two Hyundai hydrogen trucks is another milestone on the path to more sustainable logistics for the daily delivery of fresh groceries to Netto stores.
The vehicles are two Hyundai trucks with a refrigerated body, electric cooling, and a tail lift. Each truck can transport up to 19 pallets – supplemented by a trailer with a refrigerated body and PowerPack for another 18 pallets. The range is approximately 350 km to 450 km, depending on load and route. This makes the net hydrogen trucks ideal for fixed routes, which in daily operation include the hydrogen filling station for heavy goods vehicles in Neumünster. Refueling is straightforward and hardly different from a diesel filling station. The electric motor delivers 350 kW of power and ensures a particularly dynamic driving experience: Drivers report strong torque combined with low noise and vibration. This increases comfort while reducing noise pollution in cities and residential areas.
With this pilot project, Netto Marken-Discount underscores its commitment to innovative and sustainable solutions. The use of green hydrogen, produced through electrolysis using electricity from renewable energy sources, enables CO2-free delivery of goods to stores. Netto will analyze the practical use of the vehicles and examine how the technology can be further expanded within the company’s fleet in the future.
