Poland may become major hydrogen hub over coming decade says PM Morawiecki.

[The First News] The government will undertake all necessary activities for Poland to become a hydrogen hub, with Hydrogen Valley to be located in Rzeszów, south-eastern Poland, the prime minister said on Tuesday.

Speaking at a press conference in Jasionka, near Rzeszów, Mateusz Morawiecki highlighted that Poland is already a global leader in hydrogen production, in fifth place worldwide and third in Europe, which showed that Poland had the necessary know-how.

“Poland may become a hydrogen hub in the course of the next decade and we will undertake activities so that that hub comes to be,” he said. A letter of intent on the creation of Podkarpackie Hydrogen Valley was signed during the press conference.

According to prime minister, one of the key elements of worldwide energy transformation, which developed countries are concentrating on, is the “hydrogen economy,” or “transformation including hydrogen in the entire competence chain, using hydrogen in electricity production.”

Morawiecki announced that by 2034, electrolysers would be created in Poland with an output of at least 2 GW.

Climate Minister Michał Kurtyka, also present in Jasionka, said the government had various sources of finance for the hydrogen economy, including EU funds.

The potential of hydrogen to enhance the economy is recognised in Poland. There is a huge interest in this technology; Polish authorities are convinced that Poland could be one of the leading countries in this area and could be a transit country for the mixture of natural gas and hydrogen in the future. This enthusiasm is reflected in various strategic documents for the sector where hydrogen is considered. The use of hydrogen in transportation as a fuel and as a technology for energy storage are currently the main areas of growth in Poland.
