Port of Amsterdam – the keel laying of the first ship in the world to sail entirely on hydrogen, the Neo Orbis.
The keel laying of the first ship in the world that will sail entirely on hydrogen, the Neo Orbis, is a fact with the welding of a coin for prosperity and happiness for the ship and her crew. The Neo Orbis will sail on sodium borohydride and will therefore be completely emission-free.
The keel laying marks the start of construction. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of the second quarter. The second half of the year will be dominated by the installation that will mix the sodium borohydride granules with pure water, creating hydrogen.
The construction of the ship at Next GenerationShipyards in Lauwersoog is also innovative. All parts of the hull of the ship are ready as a cutting pattern. The welders will put the parts together.
Neo Orbis was partly realized with a subsidy from H2SHIPS, a European project that wants to further develop the maritime application of hydrogen for the North-West Europe region in order to drastically reduce emissions. This flagship is therefore for inspiration for the rest of shipping such as inland shipping, shortsea, dredging, offshore and naval vessels. The first investigations into this are already underway.
It is expected that Neo Orbis, which stands for New World, will come into service in 2024. More information about construction, technology and innovation can be found in the Neo Orbis brochure.
