Reliance bets on hydrogen boom, to invest $8B for development of gigafactories for fuel cells and electrolyzers.

Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) has laid down the roadmap for a mega green and clean energy business in all its critical components of solar, battery, electrolyser and fuel-cell with an investment of INR 75,000 crore in the next three years.

The company will build solar manufacturing units, a battery factory to store energy, a fuel cell-making factory and an electrolyser unit to produce green hydrogen as a part of the company’s ‘new energy’ business, Chairman Mukesh Ambani told the shareholders at the 44th annual general meeting (AGM).

Mukesh Ambani, Chairman:

The (giga factories) will manufacture and fully integrate all the critical components of the new energy ecosystem.

“For the production of solar energy we will build an integrated solar photovoltaic module factory. For the storage of intermittent energy we will build an advanced energy storage battery factory. For the production of green hydrogen we will build an electrolyser factory. Four, for converting hydrogen into motive and stationary power we will build a fuel cell factory,” he said.

These factories will be built as a part of the Dhirubhai Ambani Green Energy Giga Complex on 5,000 acres in Jamnagar, Gujarat.

“It will be among the largest such integrated renewable energy manufacturing facilities in the world,” Ambani added.

“Reliance will put Gujarat and India on the world solar and hydrogen map. All our products will proudly proclaim: Made in India, by India, for India and for the world! This will be Reliance’s yet another big contribution to our prime minister’s clarion call of Atmanirbhar Bharat,” he said.

Hydrogen fuel cells are gaining traction in the automobile market, though slowly. Green hydrogen is made through a process known as electrolysis. Industry experts say that hydrogen-powered vehicles will be the future of transportation. This technology can also play a significant role in decarbonizing long-haul road freight.

In May, world’s biggest truck-maker Daimler AG predicted that battery and hydrogen-powered trucks could be competitive with diesels on cost later this decade.

Daimler Truck CEO Martin Daum highlighted the company’s big plans for hydrogen, even though the technology is not as close to practical use as batteries and costs remain high.

As of last month, Korea had the highest number of hydrogen car distribution rates in the world where 33% of the world’s hydrogen cars are operating.
