Rostock-based APEX Group and project partners lay the foundation stone for the 10 MW HyBit electrolysis plant for the ArcelorMittal steelworks in Bremen.

The foundation stone for one of the largest industrial hydrogen projects in Germany and Europe was laid in Bremen-Mittelsbüren. The “HyBit” joint project by the energy suppliers swb and EWE and the steelworks ArcelorMittal Bremen is intended to reduce CO2 emissions in steel production and mark the start of the decarbonization of the industry.

The APEX GROUP from Rostock-Laage was entrusted with the construction of the electrolysis plant in July 2022. The HyBit project comprises an investment volume of around 20 million euros, and the system is scheduled to be completed in mid-2024.

APEX Group CEO Peter Rößner was present at the laying of the foundation stone together with the President of the Senate, Mayor Dr. Andreas Bovenschulte, the mayor and senator for climate protection, environment, mobility, urban development and housing, Dr. Maike Schaefer, and the Senator for Economics, Labor and Europe, Kristina Vogt. On the part of the project partners, EWE CEO Stefan Dohler, ArcelorMittal CEO Reiner Blaschek, and swb board member Dr. Karsten Schneiker (see photo).

HyBit sets an example for the decarbonization of steel production in Bremen

HyBit stands for Hydrogen for Bremen’s industrial transformation and marks the beginning of the decarbonization of steel production in Bremen. The aim of HyBit is to use electrolysis to produce green hydrogen at the swb power plant site in Bremen-Mittelsbüren.

This is mainly used for pig iron production and processing in the Arcelor Mittal steel works. In addition, part of the hydrogen produced can be flexibly transported by truck to other locations, such as hydrogen filling stations.

The 10 megawatt system is scheduled to go into operation in mid-2024 and will then initially produce around 1500 tons of hydrogen per year. The production quantities will be gradually increased in the future.

Peter Rößner, APEX CEO:

Hydrogen is the only CO2-neutral energy source that can replace gas in the manufacturing process.

“HyBit is a flagship project for supplying industry with green hydrogen and one of the largest industrial hydrogen projects in Germany and Europe. We are proud to be able to contribute our know-how and experience to the creation of the hydrogen electrolysis plant. Making green hydrogen available competitively and nationwide is part of APEX’s vision.”

The facts in a nutshell:

The construction of the electrolysis plant with an output of 10 megawatts is the cornerstone for green steel production in north-west Germany. The lion’s share of the green hydrogen is delivered to the ArcelorMittal steelworks in the immediate vicinity of the electrolyser. In the steelworks, the use of green hydrogen reduces CO2 emissions. In the future, the electrolysis capacities are to be expanded step by step into the three-digit megawatt range.

The project partner swb has also published a press release with further quotes from the project partners. This can be found at the address: https://www.swb.de/ueber-swb/presse/presseinformationen
