Rotterdam and Oslo Sign Agreement to Create a Short-Distance Maritime Green Transport Corridor – Samskip’s green hydrogen container ships.
The City of Rotterdam and the City of Oslo have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to create a short-distance maritime green transport corridor that will be served by SeaShuttle’s next-generation zero-emission ships from Samskip. This partnership aims to accelerate the green transition in short-distance maritime transport and support the implementation of Samskip’s green hydrogen container ships.
Kari-Pekka Laaksonen, CEO of Samskip Holding BV, expressed enthusiasm for this partnership and the positive results obtained from green transition efforts. Both Rotterdam and Oslo have invested in decarbonization initiatives to drive the maritime industry forward. As part of Europe’s largest multimodal network, Samskip operates major terminals in both cities.
Magnús Salberg Óskarsson, Business Development Director at Samskip, emphasized the importance of collaboration and accelerating greener logistics to achieve ambitious decarbonization goals. The partnership between Samskip, Rotterdam, and Oslo will contribute to a cleaner and brighter future for all.
The green corridor will utilize two zero-emission SeaShuttles from Samskip, currently being constructed by Cochin Shipyard and set to be delivered in 2025. These ships, powered by a 3.2 MW hydrogen fuel cell each, will be among the world’s first short-distance zero-emission container ships to use green hydrogen as fuel. They will operate weekly routes between Rotterdam and ports in the Oslo Fjord region, establishing end-to-end corridor services.
The project is co-funded by the Norwegian state-owned company ENOVA. It is estimated that each ship will reduce approximately 25,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year by being powered by fuel cells and using green shore power at the port of call.
By establishing this green corridor, Rotterdam and Oslo are demonstrating their commitment to sustainability and the green transition in the maritime industry. This partnership sets an example for other cities and companies to collaborate and work towards a cleaner future.
