RWE has launched a new initiative to teach children about hydrogen and its importance in achieving net zero in Pembrokeshire schools
RWE has launched a new initiative to teach children about hydrogen and its importance in achieving net zero.
The renewable energy company has teamed up with Generation C to create the Hydrogen Education Programme, which aims to inspire young minds through interactive, curriculum-based activities.
The programme will educate children on hydrogen’s properties, production, and its increasing use in industries driving the clean energy transition.
Henry Tudor High School in Pembroke has already introduced the secondary school lesson, while Golden Grove Primary School in Pembroke is set to start a rollout shortly.
Through the programme, students will explore how hydrogen, as a clean energy source, is integral to reducing emissions in industries like transport, manufacturing, and energy.
Activities will include real-world case studies showcasing how hydrogen is being used in RWE’s innovative projects, and group challenges encouraging students to think critically about how hydrogen can be applied to address global climate issues.
Headteacher Mr A Williams, of Golden Grove Primary School, said:
As a head of a large primary school in Pembrokeshire, an area that is and should be on the frontline of green energy growth, it is imperative that we build long and meaningful relationships with companies like RWE.
“The initial lesson really captivated our learners. They fully understand the need for green energy, particularly the new hydrogen plant.”
The beauty of the new Welsh curriculum is that we can amend it to our community needs – children making an electrolyser to produce hydrogen is the start of a journey that could really flourish with businesses and the education sector working together.
“The children are already looking forward to what lessons are coming next. Ultimately, though, there is also the far broader aspect on what it could mean in the future for our young learners as they enter the world of work. This whole project has the ability to provide highly skilled jobs in our county and we need our learners to be at the forefront of that.”
Louise McDonnell, RWE hydrogen development manager, said:
Our Hydrogen Education Programme is about equipping young people with the knowledge and inspiration to make a difference.
“Hydrogen is a game-changer in the fight against climate change, and through this initiative, we’re helping students see the possibilities and opportunities in clean energy.”
The programme aligns with RWE’s commitment to engaging the next generation in the journey toward a sustainable future, fostering curiosity, and empowering students to take an active role in shaping a greener world.
