Sarawak targets cheaper, cleaner hydrogen with Siemens partnership

KUALA LUMPUR: The Sarawak Government is confident that hydrogen production costs can be reduced to just 10 kilowatt-hours per kilogram (kWh/kg), compared to the current rate of 30 kWh/kg. Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that this goal could be achieved through a collaboration with renowned German energy company, Siemens Energy.

He said the partnership aims to produce hydrogen more efficiently and with lower energy consumption.

He said during the ‘Leading ASEAN Sustainability and Digitalisation’ session at the ASEAN Women Economic Summit (AWES) today,

There is potential to reduce the cost even further.

“Through our ongoing collaboration with Siemens, we are targeting energy use of about 10 kWh/kg of hydrogen. What I’m saying here is that we are moving towards clean hydrogen,”

Abang Johari added that through joint research with PETRONAS Research and a Japanese company, Sarawak has successfully reduce hydrogen production energy use from 60 kWh/kg to 30 kWh/kg using new membrane technology.

He explained:

This research not only improves energy efficiency but also supports Sarawak in meeting environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards

He emphasised that the development of clean energy will be a significant contribution from Sarawak and Malaysia towards building a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly world.

Earlier, the Premier also toured the AWES 2025 exhibition alongside other distinguished guests.
