Schiphol Airport consortium secures €25m to push envelope on sustainability, hydrogen for aviation.

[TR Business] The European Commission has awarded €25 million/$29 million under the European Green Deal to a 29-strong consortium of parties headed by Royal Schiphol Group.

Cash for the parties in the consortium named TULIPS will be used to unbox innovations that support the transition to low-carbon mobility and increase sustainability at airports.

Aims include rolling out sustainable technologies and contributing significantly towards zero emissions and zero waste by 2030 and climate-neutral aviation by 2050.

AMS ‘PROVING GROUND’

Running from January next year until December 2025, the TULIPS programme will use Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) as the ‘proving ground’ for 17 demonstrator projects borne out of the collaboration between parties in the consortium.

Reducing or eliminating vehicle emissions, testing facilities for recharging aircraft with electricity or hydrogen, introducing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and improving use of circular materials are among the the innovations.

Partner airports at Oslo, Turin and Larnaka will also implement a selection of these.

Royal Schiphol Group in a statement.

The outcomes of the project are expected to contribute significantly to the decarbonisation of the aviation sector.

“The relevant knowledge gained will be shared publicly with the aviation industry and other European airports, which will allow them to apply the TULIPS concepts and technologies through practical roadmaps.”
